Recently (last couple of weeks) I've been having increasing problems starting Internet Explorer (v6); more often than not it immediately produces a blue screen of death. This disappears when a key is pressed, and doesn't prevent me using other programs, but it reappears whenever I try IE again. All I can do is restart my system and hope the problem disappears; sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn't.
The error message code varies, but I've had each of the following a number of times:
0D : 0947 : 0000C164
06 : 0000 : 0000001B
06 : 0947 : 0000C7E1
as well as others which I haven't noted.
When IE does get started, it seems to be perfectly stable.
Also, sometimes when I try to restart the computer after this problem, I get another BSD with no error code and just the message "Windows protection error. You need to restart your computer. System halted."
Does anyone have any ideas?

Malware programs and browser hijackers are normally the cause of such strange errors, so we assume you have done AV scans, Spyware/ADware scans with Ad-Aware SE and Spybot S&D and removed all such hidden Malware programs.
So try doing a simple run of System Tools - Disk CleanUp utility. Then run it again and this time select the "Downloaded Program Files" line, click View button, and manually remove all "objects" shown unless you know for a fact that you need to keep it, in case one of these plug-ins are back level, infected or causing problems with IE. They will download again if required.
After rebooting, start IE and in the Tools - Internet Options, in the "Temporary Internet files" section, "Delete Files" to get rid of most of the TIF files.
