I have a WIN Me workstation that restarts but doesn't shutdown. During shutdown the screen goes black and I have to power the pc off myself. This is a brand new system. Any tips?

If you have a brand new system, it is most likely fairly fast... it may be using an ATA 100 controller for the hard drives.
Read this Knowledgebase article...especially the part about editing the regsitry:
ScanDisk Runs Even Though Windows Shut Down Correctlyand obtain the fix from:
Windows UpdteIf this does not fix your issue, please contact your system manufacturer for other ideas/compliants. If it is a new system, the manufacturer should know about this issue and they may be able to help you more.

This is exactly like my problem! I have been investigating this for months now. I have been thru the win trouble shooter many times, following every aspect to the T. I have searched the web every single day for weeks and weeks. I have upgraded, changed, deinstalled drivers blah blah....
The only possible solution was the disabling the following item in system.ini
Running msconfig from start run, click on system.ini tab, expand the boot option, deselect "display.drv=pnpdrvr.drv".BTW. I hav a RIVA TNT2 32Mb video card.
BUT and this is a big one at that! Your display settings go out the window, you cannot change anything. Sorry this is no real solution but at least I shutdown without that dreaded blue screen of death!

Newgrl...THANK YOU for the info, it worked very well. And after all the troubleshooting I had done, your way was a very simple fix.
Ray, you might want to give Newgrl's above suggestion a try, my pc shuts completely down now, no hanging up at all.
