After leaving this particular computer unused for approximately 2 weeks, I booted up to find nothing but a black/blank screen.
The computer breezes through the Blue HP screen, goes black, brings up the Windows ME splash then goes black/blank. The monitor goes into what would be referred to as hibernation (Amber light, no display) but there is still hard drive activity.
I have recently made a few changes to this computer. I added an extra 256MB of Crucial RAM on top of the 128MB provided as standard and messed around with 802.11g Wireless PCI and USB adapters. After installing the RAM it would boot fine and display the correct amount. I know it is compatible. I don't think the wireless adapters could create such a problem? All I have at the moment is a USB adapter which I found worked fine.
The twist to this problem is that I am able to boot into safe mode and everything functions as it should do (Well, in safe mode). I has exactly the same problem with another computer last year and it turned out to be a duff RAM stick causing the issue.
The fact that this computer boots into safe mode and functions fine would imply that RAM is not an issue, wouldn't it? You would expect two sticks to provide some form of redundancy wouldn't you?
I have seen many other people on these forums with similar problems, but they either get an error message or a screen with a cursor/green object. I have no such luck. Some have pointed to graphics cards, but this computer uses Integrated graphics that have worked fine for a good 2 years.
Any help in locating and solving this problem would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance!

in safe mode have a look in device manager is every think ok there?
••• Resistance is invigorating!••• kill spyware

Only a good standalone memory test like MemTest86_v3.1a will tell you if your memory is OK. Safe Mode uses less memory and does not put any where near as much stress on the memory of a machine as normal mode does.

Thanks for your help so far.
I booted into safe mode and checked out Device Manager. I found that there were many, many duplicate entries for different devices (sometimes 5-10 entries for a single device, all going by the same name). I have not seen this on any other computer, but then again I've not checked device manager under safe mode before? Is this normal, or atleast not going to be causing or problem?
I also noticed atleast 10 different display adapters. All were going under different manafactureres and names. Could this be a display adapter driver problem?
Thanks
