Comment:

I haven't been able to boot my system in
anything but safe mode since I tried to add
some DVD software. If I try to boot in
normal mode I get the following -

Exception OE has occured at 0028:D2D90AFA in
VXD ---
This was called from 0028:C182843C in VXD
SCSI1hlp(03)+0000077c.

When I am in safe mode a go to the device
manager I have multiple devices under
monitor(10+), display adapter(10+) and
mouse(3).

It almost seems like the system is not
recognizing the hw and adding it to the
device list each time I try to boot. I have
an onboard 810 display adapter but in
addition to 3 copies of it there are 815,
820, nvidia, and other devises shown.

I've tried re-installing ME from recovery
disks and this did nothing to improve
things.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

If you do not have a SCSI drive interface in your system, using Safe Mode, go to C:\Windows\System\IOsubSYS folder and make a SAVE folder. Then move the SCSI1hlp.VXD file to this SAVE folder. You should be able to move TORISAN3.VXD, NECATAPI.VXD, ATAPCHNG.VXD and SCSI1hlp.VXD to the SAVE folder and out of the IOSUBSYS folder. (You can later delete this SAVE folder and these files I you find you do not need the.

This will prevent SCSI1hlp.VXD from loading (as it is not needed on most Windows ME systems) and should at least avoid the specific error you are getting. Not to say you will not get other errors now.

But the logical thing to do would be to try to un-install the DVD player software using first Add/Remove Programs entry or its un-install program. You should be able to do this from Safe Mode.

Almal, what if you simply restore?

Thanks for the suggestions. I moved the
files in the IOsubsys folder. Now I get a windows protection error or the monitor just goes blank. When I boot in step by step mode it stops at msmouse.vxd.

I do have a SCSI device but I removed it
when trying to troubleshoot the problem.

I had previously tried the restore approach
and this didn't work. I got a message that
restore didn't work.

I was able to solve the problem by removing all non microsoft vxd files from the IOsubSYS folder. Some of these were associated with a backup program that used a SCSI tape drive and I think these might have been the problem.

Thanls to JackG for pointing me in the right direction.
