I have a dual boot system with windows ME on c,and windows xp pro on d.Everything has worked great till I added a new hard drive.I wanted to have a drive for back-ups,not to boot from.Problems started when I USED THE MAXTOR boot disk and thought I needed ez bios.I also installed some bogus program on to c drive and it messed up my ability to boot to win ME.It stops at autoexec.bat and hangs. When you type "win" to start windows it says "system halted" need microsoft file allocation help file or something.ifshlp missing. Now is impossible to boot to ME.XP boots ok.I need to know if I sys c can I get the xp partition manager back and how,or if anybody has a fix for booting to ME that is painless.Normally when I boot to me you get a choice of safe mode and all that, only one option available now;normal, then it stops at autoexec.bat.Have tried to edit from autoexec.bak and doesnot work.Any suggestions would be awesome.Dont want to loose data or partition manager.A big TIA, Rob

Yes can boot to a prompt. Can also boot to win xp on other partition.I am getting windows to load up to the autoexec.bat, then it stops and halts system with this."microsoft installable file system manager cannot find the helper driver. Please ensure that IFSHLP.SYS is installed." I have looked and that file is there on c drive(with ME).

hello you need to do fdisk /mbr and reboot windoz will replace mbr on start up. if its the drive d partion that xp is on and you may have to do at the a:\d:\fdisk /mbr and reboot. as for m.e you need to do scanreg /restore at the a:\c:\scanreg /restore. this will remove that bad program from registery on c: and allow you to boot into m.e you have 5 days of scanreg restore back ups by default and lose one each new day you start computer.times afactor a good scanreg point will have started beside it. have a nice day OT Forum d/l delindex.bat

Thanks wawadave.I have tried all that and more. The maxtor programm boogered something up.If I f-disk the mbr, that I lose my xp boot manager loaded on c drive.(with ME).I would like to reload windows over itself but am afraid it will overwrite the boot manager. The sad thing is I purchased another hdd for the purpose of putting a ghost image on it for back-ups of my c and d drives. If anybody has any ideas on how to fix ME without messing up XP I would be eternally gratefull!!

found solution.Ran install of ME over-itself from dos.Not only did it fix the windows me problem, but it left the XP boot manager intact. The only difference was the default os is now ME.I suspect it can be editd.
