I am posting in hopes someone out there can tell me what might be causing these blue screens I'm getting when using ctrl. alt. delete and pushing end task to close running programs before installing software or doing a scan disk or defrag. This also happened today when I double clicked internet explorer, I kept waiting on it to go online , the little timer thingy came up, but nothing happened. So I pushed ctrl. alt. delete because it wasn't responding. When I did that, I got a blue screen of death telling me windows was waiting on the close dialog box to appear, to push any key to return to windows or ctrl.alt. delete to restart my computer, when I pushed a key, I got another blue screen telling me the system had become unstable, so I pushed a key and the close dialog box finally came up saying IE wasn't responding, which this was on a black screen now. I clicked end task and it returned to windows. I restarted my computer at this point. I have also gotten blue screens when pushing ctrl. alt. delete and end task to close out running programs. These have the error OE:017F:BFF9B34 or either OE:017F:BFF8E64B. Anyone out there know what might be the cause of these? I have also already got it in a selective start up using msconfig. And I still got the blue screen today, so that isn't the solution. Thanks for any suggestions.

not exactly sure what the problem is here. double clicking the internet explorer icon and not being able to connect directly to the internet could be a number of problems. im assuming you have an always on connection because i see no mention of you waiting for it to dial out first. there could be some problem with your internet service provider or possibly with internet explorer or hardware/drivers directly related to accessing the internet. using ctrl/alt/del? you mean 2 seconds after something not instantly happening or after waiting 15 minutes to see what happens? My brother complains about the terrible errors with windowsME but i have yet to experience any while looking over his system. I did however notice him pounding away at the mouse one day trying to get an image to load like someone hitting the elevator up button over and over as if it causes it to speed up. Selective start up? this is meaningless/dangerous if you dont know exactly what to turn off or leave on. for example the program that allows your usb ports to function needs to be on at startup. also the "ANY KEY" may or may not be on your keyboard! This was a huge mistake made by pc manufacturers in the early 90's that has spilled over into the new millenium. the current keyboards support this "any key" allowing you to escape the blue screen of death but older models dont include the imfamous "anykey" causing a user to get stuck :)j/k>> More system information, software installed, when the problem began to help further!

selective startup is meaningfull (because it affects what your computer does from the START to the END) and least dangerous thing on computer because it is fully reversible, you can go to the full startup or check back the things you *really* need, i did check back some things on my notebook computer, (swappable bay, pcmcia monitoring.....) best thing is to experiment starting with just SystemTray, LoadPowerProfile and ScanRegistry... b.t.w. my USB ports did not get disabled on Windows ME and either on winodws 98 computers even when i had just SystemTry and nothing else in the startup :-)

Diana, post your complete computer specs and if windows ME is factory installed or upgrade...are you runnin any virus protection?...is your PC is still under waranty? can you remember doing something to the coputer before that started to happen?(installing new software/hardware some peoples computers got slaughtered by "savenow" spyware.....)... how often does it happen? ( if it is once a week that is well withing the windwos norm, every windows crashes occasionally... hehehe)... did you try to use "System Restore"? to the point of time when it was not happening?
Regards Miro

Yes, I had been going back into msconfig and turning on one program at a time trying to find out a program that was causing my auto disconnect box from coming up when I closed out the last web page I was looking at. I got this blue screen when I reenable one of the programs in my startup folder, restarted my computer, then tried to go online by double clicking IE. The computer locked up and the modem didn't dial or anything. I tried double clicking again, then I pushed ctrl. alt. delete and got the blue screen. I have an 866 MHZ. Pentium III processor with 128MB of Ram. I have a 40 GB hard drive, if that matters. It's an HP Pavilion PC. It has a CD Rom drive and a CD-RW drive.
