Having a problem, I shut down my computer, install a new video card in an empty PCI slot, and after I power up my computer again I get a blank screen on the monitor. What am I doing wrong?
system is
HP Intel Celeron 700mhz 383mb memory Intel 82810 graphics card DSL connection

When you say 'an empty PCI' slot, do you mean you're not putting it in the first slot? It is recommended that graphics cards are installed in the first PCI slot due to default IRQ configurations.

Ok, after you asked that, I went ahead and threw the video card in the bottom PCI slot (not sure if the top or bottom is the #1 slot), and then the very top slot (had to pull out old modem). Both times the screen stayed blank when i powered up the computer. SO I take the card out put the old modem back in, everything as it was....run up the PC, my modes are all set to 640 x 480 resolution with 16 colors. So I go to change them back to 800x600 and true color, and the system requires to be restarted. So I restart, and it's the same thing...640 x 480 with 16 colors. Checked to make sure old video card is enabled, and it is...then changed display settings back and restarted again, same thing 640 x 480 with 16 colors. What happened??

Also one thing to add. I go to Advanced Display options on the Display menu, select the options that says 'Apply the new color settings without restarting', I hit 'Apply' and get the message 'There is not enough memory to run the deskcp16.dll Please close other windows and try again' Yet I already have all other windows closed and I have 383MB memory.

One more thing... I tried running a game to see what would happen, and got the 'No 3D devices found' error. Obviously Ive had one in there, and havent removed the original 3D device (it's in the motherboard)

This article describes exactly how to change video cards

Windows is using a standard driver for your card. You need to install the specific drivers for your video card to be able to change settings.

What was the original problem before you shut down the computer and decided to install a video card?
The pc should detect new hardware if it's plug-and-play but you may need to go into the BIOS on bootup and configure the graphics setup - see Trev's reply (number 5) above.

Moving this to a new subject....no longer care about blank screen after installing video card, just concerned with getting old video card working (to get back to old display modes)
