About 5 months ago, we got high speed internet, but I didn't have a firewall on it, so within like 2 days, the computer was loaded and almost totally incapacited by spyware. So, I downloaded Zone Alarm and I frequently run Ad-aware and spybot on my computer, but ever since then, we have still had problems.
Just within the last month, I don't know why, but any internet pop ups don't display and then any links that I click on that bring up a new window don't work. They bring up that new window, but the window is blank. I have been able to access some links by copying the shortcut and pasting it in the address bar, but it doesn't always work. I think that the only time that trick doesn't work is when it's a javascript window. So, I downloaded java, but to no luck. I have tried to repair internet explorer, but it gives an error and says it cannot repair it. My best guess is that my computer is infected with a spyware that all of these free internet downloads aren't catching. I just don't want to go buy an expensive "spyware removing" program and have it not help at all. Thanks for your input!

It's me again, I just ran a free scan, but pay to repair thing called adwarespy off the web and it came up with 250 things, and 200 of them were in the Active X compatibility. Some of the things were
WIN32/aspam.Trojan
ClientMan
PeopleOnPage

I've read a little bit about these in some of the other postings and isn't this most likely what's causing all of these problems? Is it worth the 39.95 to purchase AdwareSpy or is there a cheaper program that will give the same results? Thanks!

According to Rogue/Suspect Anti-Spyware Products & Web Sites

AdwareSpy:

false positives work as goad to purchase; same app as 2004 Adware/Spyware Remover & Blocker, ADS Adware Remover, AdWare SpyWare Blocker & Removal, AdwareX Eliminator, Privacy Tools 2004, SpyBeware, & The Web Shield; Ad-Aware knockoff [A: 6-29-04 / U: 7-7-04]

If you trust sites who rip off products like AD-Aware and then sell it to people, then go ahead and give them your money (and credit card information while you are at it.)

The "free" programs like Ad-Aware SE and Spybot S&D are better than most of the products that ask you to pay for them. So update their reference files and run them again. Then do some of the free online virus scans.

It is more likely that some parts of Windows ME and Internet Explorer have been damaged. Spyware and anti-virus programs can not fix such damage, only reloading the OS and/or Internet Explorer can do that. The fact that you can not do a repair of IE through the Control Panel - Add/Remove programs should tell you that there is some damage. Try going to the Microsoft Download site and download the install package for Internet Explorer 6.0 sp1 and then install it again. Then do it its updates.
