Hi,
Im trying to upgrade the bios on a old laptop (Digital hinote VP 715).
I have the correct bios upgrade direct from the manufactures site.have followed their instructions to a tee.
When i get to the upgrade part (boot from the disk i created ,i get a error message:

Phoenix phlash error

Cannot flash when memory managers ( e.g. HIMEM) are present.
press any key to exit.

So of course you press the "any key" (go homer, lol)and it exits without a bios upgrade being performed...
Any ideas what the HIMEM is and how to disable it??
just a quick histery of the laptop:It was orriginally win 95 , i upgraded to ME,but i didnt use a upgrade disk ,just renamed the winfile from win.com to win.new.
but i dont think this is the prob as i tried to do a bios upgrade bak when it was running 95 and got the same message then as well.
thanks in advance guys and gurls...
Oz

Just for fun...
I removed the hard drive from the laptop, retried the bios upgrade and i still got the same error message.
So its definatly not a ME or Old 95 issue ..it must be a bios setting ???
Any ideas???

You need a plain dos boot disk to flash a bios.Make a copy of your ME boot disk and delete config.sys and autoexec.bat from it.The memory is managed by the config.sys file.Reboot to flash using this boot disk.Keep in mind that flashing is risky and has little to do with problems running operating systems on the computers. You do it to improve support for hardware like USB etc.
del a:\config.sys (press Enter)
del a:\autoexec.bat (press Enter)
Good luck.

ummm..i think i missed somethink petit jean...
I went to add/remove programs on the ME laptop, went creat a start up disk, rebooted using the floppy i just created, del a:\config.sys (press Enter)
del a:\autoexec.bat (press Enter),
then i took the disk to my other computer with the bios upgrade folder on it and tried to copy all the files on to the disk that the instuctions say to put onto the floppy ,but they wouldent fit .Says disk is full????
is ther another way to make a dos boot disk?
What i did the first time was to format a floppy in my XP machine with the opption of "create a ms-dos start up disk", then i copied the files to it ...thats wen i got the error message when i tried to do the bios upgrade...
Does this make sence???
Still confused....

Do you care about this computer at all? A bad BIOS flash will destroy it, and I mean permanently. If you do not know what you are doing get a friend or take it to a shop that does.

hello
you must make a minimum install boot disk that dose not install himem in ram drive. there are other files that need to be removed from bootdisk. do a google on this.
some bios flashes it dose not mater yours it dose because of the error mesage.
in case you screw up the flash you can goto

1. Have one floppy with the NEW BIOS & flash utility on it...nothing more.

2. Have another floppy being the WinME startup disk.

3. Boot off the startup disk & select the last option...I think it's "minimal boot" or something like that. Then, at the A prompt, remove the startup disk & insert the other disk....

4. Type in the flash utility file name (without the .exe) & hit enter...follow the instructions...

Even if the Flash works, I bet you still have problems with the modem you bought for it!

I don't think a bios update is the answer to fixing your modem....

It would have been interesting to know what the original problem was with the modem...

Response #9 is the simplest instructions so far, if these do not work it's time to review the instructions that the BIOS upgrade said.

While learning to do stuff yourself seems "fun", this is one of those things that can terminally screw up your pc so take your time to get it right - after all you've taken the trouble to get the proper upgrade and pay for it which on the internet has to be a first!

Hope it all goes ok for you and remember www.badflash.com if it doesn't.

well im at work now so i havent got the bios install instructions here in front of me now.
but i do have the modem and laptop details..and the reason why i want to try a bios upgrade:
http://computing.net/hardware/wwwboard/forum/18196.html
that was wen i first had 95 running..
i can use the network card part of the modem ..but not the modem its self..
problem is it just wont get a dial tone in the modem..but says dialing then goes strait to checking username and password .
but i think its a port problem..not the modem..

older bios flashes high mem on the floppy will cause it not to install flash.and they need a min install boot disk a reg m.e boot disk wont work with high mem still on it. as i said you will need to google this. as i did a boot disk like this 3 years ago and cant rember the percise instructions .on what to remove. newer bios flashes are not bothered by high memory or the other files that need to be remove. in witch case repply 9 would work fine its a standered modern bios flash methoud.but the fact that high mem is a problem you must find the some what older methoud to flash it.
and with the proper files removed that reboot to dos and at the a: pull out bootdisk as every thing on that floppy is loaded to ram drive.next put in floppy with bios flash on it and use dos to install flash from second floppy.
do google for more info.
