I would only recommend upgrading to ME if you are having problems with 98se (such as conflicts with hardware or software, etc). Also, hardware requirements are higher for ME than 98se so I wouldn't recommend the change unless you have a PII233 or better and at least 64MB RAM as a minimum (preferably 128 or more).

If you want some of the other features, such as Restore, Media Player, or the movie editing program, you can buy or download programs that do the same things equally well or better (such as "GoBack" instead of Restore).

Good luck with whatever you decide.

Dont expect the price to drop down too much. 98SE still sells for 199.00 for the full retail version at micro center :).
I have a windowsME step up disc that i bought the day ME was released. it was the promo for users of windows98SE. I purchased the full version so i could cleanly install ME. Just sitting on the software shelf If you want it you can have it.
Whats your zipcode? i can ship it media mail for a couple of bucks. If your not in the 48 states (not inlcuding alaska and hawaii)your paying for shipping :) You must have a windows 98SE disc for a clean install.
If your system comes with a recovery diskset (HP compaq etc.) you will need to first install windows 98SE then upgrade over with the ME stepup disc.
If you do have recovery disks instead of a stand alone windows 98se disc i strongly suggest getting the full version to get rid of the junk the computer makers force into your system. But if you dont mind the junk email me with your address and keep an eye for the mail.

I don't mean to go off on a rant here but...

My personal advice would be to STAY AWAY from Windows ME. It is really a poorly done OS by Microsoft and many users have had nothing but problems with it. If you don't believe me, then just scan some of the posts on this forum. Alot of the tech support people I talk to at Ameritech have had nothing but headaches from it as well. Unless you are purchasing a new system with ME pre-installed, I would not use this OS.

Again, just my personal opinion, but you should really go with XP Home Edition. I've got XP Professional up and running on my machine and it is a much better OS than ME. You get the stability of the NT\2000 kernel plus the benefits of Plug N' Play and some other goodies to boot. Yeah, it may cost u a bit more money, but you'll have alot less headaches in the long run.

We still don't know what kind of system he's upgrading. I'm guessing the hardware requirements for XP are even higher than ME. Paul, what are your system specs?

paul, is your windows 98 working fine?... if yes then dont fix what is not broken.
if your windows 98 is not working good then "upgrading" to windows ME will not solve your problems, you would have to do a clean install... before doing that i would first try to fix windows 98 by
- reloading over itslef
- if the above does not help then reloading into a different subdirectory
- if the above does not help formating and clean install
Whatever you decide to do always completely back up all your data on a removable media
Regards

Artman,
That is a very good point. I assumed that since Paul wanted to actually go out and buy ME, he would be better off in the long run purchasing XP since, besides increased RAM, the system requirements are not all that different (this goes to show what a resource-hog ME is). And with RAM as cheap as it is today, upgrading is not such a problem. Below are the basic system requirements for XP Home Edition:

Pentium 233 MHz or faster processor
128 MB RAM
1.5 GB hard disk space
CD-ROM or DVD drive
Sound card
Keyboard and mouse

Paul, Microsoft recommends for Windows ME that you have:

150 MHz Pentium or faster processor (300 MHz or faster needed for using Windows Media Player, 400 MHz if using a digital video camera)
32 MB RAM (64 MB needed for using Windows Media Player)
270 MB hard disk space for typical installation (includes 100 MB average for backup files during installation; total may range from 220 to 410 MB depending on system configuration and options selected; additional 4 MB required for each stored song if using Windows Media Player)
CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive

Amazon.com sells ME for approximately $190.00 and you can get XP Home Edition for $200.00. The upgrades are cheaper, of course.

Paul, Post 7 offers another good point. If your current OS serves your needs, then stick with it. You can get some of the extra features of ME and XP like IE 6.0 and Windows Media Player directly from Microsoft's website for free. However, if you are intent on upgrading, XP Home Edition would probably be your best bet. I would personally avoid ME as much as possible.

I think response number 5 is a little over the top. I have full licensed copies of all Win9X versions (yes - both 98 and SE) and have found that a PROPERLY installed version of WinME is the best choice. It is far more stable than 98SE - the reason tech support people have problems with it is that by the time they get involved with it users have scrambled it beyond recogintion with bits of 95 and 98 strewn about. That is why you see so many frustrated posts. That said it is not a good upgrade for the money what with the retail version of XP coming out so soon. My advice is that if someone gives you a copy don't be afraid to use it but if you are actually wanting a true UPGRADE wait for XP. Of course if you do buy XP also plan on upgrading any Norton or Macafee utilities you have because they wont work with XP, of course most wont work with ME either, so there is always that extra cost when considering an OS upgrade.
