Name: Nick R (by Nick Ritchie)
Hi to all ,on August thrid its my B-Day ,and my wife has told me to pick out a brand spanking new system .My current one is out dated P3 750 256M.B SDRAM DVD-ROM and CD-RW , a ATI 32M.B. Graphics card and a PCI sound card (I added RAM ,the CD-RW ,the Graphics cardand sound card to this system ,came with intergrated graphics and sound that where both terrible ! It has a 30 G.B. harddrive ,which I still have two thrids left ,however I want a DVD-Burner plus so I dont have to upgrade later want at least a 160 G.B H.D. perhaps a 200 G.B. I already have a brand new keyboard a silver logitech with all backlitee keys and a small LCD sceen that gives you either game or PC info while on PC .My current PC O/S WinMe also I have ATI TV Wonder U.S.B. Edition ,ATI may have released software and drivers so I can use it with WinXP ,if not I may want a TV card ,since they give you better image qaulity, then the U.S.B. ones .All suggestions greatly appreciated ,basically I need the main PC with all internial parts ,and a flat panel screen ,looking at a budget of around $1,000.00 ,all suggestions greatly appreciated ,still on a dial up internet srvice and will probably stay with one for now ,dont need a $90 internet bill for cable .I know use netzero high speed and it works well enough for me .Iam not a big gamer ,however would like ability to play new games if I so wish ! Suggestions with link if possible ,or any suggestions are frine .On O/S XP Pro or Home ! Iam not crazy about WinxP ,and will request all bloatware removed from new PC, you know all the added stuff in case you want such and such internet service ,anti virus specials etc .I will pick and chose that stuff myself !
Thanks to All ,Nick

$90.00/month internet bill..........huh?
You can't be that far deep in the boonies, FYI. You can get broadband these days for what we all eagerly paid for dialup back in the days. Depending on where you are located, you *should* be able to get a good DSL deal with a local provider.
With your computing needs, I would recommend something from an OEM like Dell, it should fit into your plan nicely. For example right now you can get an Inspiron E1505 (Intel Core Duo T2300E) @ well under $700.00 (after instant savings) & the performance will blow the P3 away - I know you are looking for a desktop but that is just a pointer.

Thank for the advice Sabertooth actually on the comcast bill that would be incluuding my basic cable TV line also ! Which is around $50 a month it constantly changing upwards it seems everytime get the bill some newly added charge ? Anyway I was thinking Dell, however I dont want one of those liyyle mini tower thingy's as I stated I want a system with room to grow.?
Take Care ,Nick

If you are really looking for something you can upgrade in the near future, why not build one from the scratch?
You have full control over all the components selected & maximize that $1000.00 budget plus you get a system customized just for you.

Oh jesus, don't mention home builds to Nick. By the time it's complete C2D will be monolithic and most of humanity dead.

Actually I have been told Dell by about four more people all who work with PC's for a living . As far as doing my own build Iam sure I could it ,and put it together in a couple of days ,however I admit I do have a problem with loading the O/S myself etc. I was told if I decide to go Dell to get the XPS system 2.8 G.B. for about $149 I can upgrade to the 19" monitor form the 17" it comes with .This would be a dual core processor H/T technology 1 gig of DDR RAM ,I would get a graphic card upgrade ,or buy one myself and install it ,like I did with my current system I want to make sure I get the proper DVD burner that covers all formats .You guys can joke all you want ,however I have no doubt I could put a powerful system together with with a much more detail then any advice I get around here ,answer to every problem is , reinstall your O/S ,reinstall your O/S ,sound like a broken record of the same old song ! My PC is running just fine now and I learned alot along the way ,with out losing all of my documents and current software installs.Perhaps I enjoy trying to work on a problem and how it would be fixed ,then REINSTALL YOUR O/S OH Jeez. For those interested ,I will post when I have my new system !
Take Care Nick

No offence intended Nick, I should have put a :-) at the end.
But you do seem misguided, or at least, to misunderstand in a lot of your posts, particularly in the questioning / reasoning department. Which is what baffles a number of onlookers. I won't go into previous postings and problems here.
Yes, I'm sure you could build your own machine - on the proviso you researched and prepared intensively beforehand. And you would likely get a lot from the experience, I don't know anyone who doesn't building their own.
Yes, the safe option is to go with a reputable OEM brand. You need to decide exactly what type of machine you want by determining what your needs are.
Or, you can just blow a full grand on the highest spec'd machine you can, going either route. Either way there are some steals to be had at the moment and it should stay like that for a while yet, mainly due to Intel shaking the monkey tree with the arrival of it's new darling baby.
Post the advise details you've been given so far, and answer the primary questions above (about needs), and you'll get plenty of responses.
You could build a cracking, cheap, kickass system based on S939.

Jeez. Don't get another computer! You'll try to tweak the crap out of it until it doesn't work, and then post endless, inane pleas for help and mercy. Please spare us!
Well, it least will be on the XP forum.
Besides, why wait for Vista when you can have the last of XP with WGA thrown in?

Nick, I rarely recommend to reformat/reinstall...but sometimes there is no other way. You had your system so screwed up & it was obvious from your constant posts that you were making little or no headway with it that I (& others) recommended you reformat. You never did & that lead to even more posts.
Store bought PCs come with so much useless software installed it's not funny. When I bought my daughter an HP notebook, the 1st thing(s) I did was to tweak XP, remove all the crap software, & run Windows Update. Then I installed CCleaner, Adaware, Spybot & a few other programs. She hasn't had a problem with it since (about 9 months) & she uses it everyday....
Anyhow, building a system is simple...A goes to A, B goes to B, C goes to C, etc. Selecting the right hardware to "compliment" each other is the key to good performance & you can get plenty of opinions on that in the hardware, CPU, & gaming forums.
The installation of the OS & other software is generally where most people go awry & it's difficult to "fix" software problems thru a forum. And when the OP lacks the knowledge, or the confidence, or has preconceived ideas about what he/she's willing to do (i.e., "I refuse to update to IE6"), it makes helping all the more difficult. That turns into frustration & ultimately leads to derogatory comments about one's mental capacity. Even though some people claim to have a 140 I.Q.!

Well it look like iits going to e a Dell XPS 2.8 Gig. dual core processor 800FSB 1 Gig DDR Ram 160G.B. hard drive dul drives DVD-ROM and CD/DVD Burner (DVD+/-RW) 2nd bay , Iam going for a graphic card upgrade instead of the intergrated raphics it would come with ,this will be a XP Windows Media Center Edition ,I already have the Logitech x15 gaming keyboard .It was a gift ,it ax neat keyboard that hass all back lite keys a small LCD diplay which provides game or PC stats whil using ,Iam going to btpass almost all of their software options ,except get the anti-virus ,probably stay with Norton ,last but not least going for te 29" flat panel upgrade for a extra 149.00 ! They are having some kind of special till the 5th of Agust my B-day is Agust 3rd ,so I have'nt actually plced order ,so Iam no comintted to anything yet ,however this appears to be the direction Iam heading in ,of course I would love to get the 3.4 gig provessor ,however realalisticailly ,2.8 should be more then enough speed ,Iam not big gammed ,however I like the idea of the dual processors ,beccasue Iam going to keep my TV Wonder USB ,apprently ATI has drivers and software for Windows XP ,only thing I dont remeber if when I purchased the current one I have if USB 2.0 was the standard yet ,so for $80 at Best Buy ,I may have to buy the new USB TV Wonder, Dell has the option of installing a TV card which does get better quality picture however I would not be concerned about copying anything off it and my current TV Wonder has a very good picture ! Thanks to everyone that offered positive recomendations ,Iam still open for more does or dont's for a couple of more days B/4 I place order !
Take Care Friends
Nick
