I was wondering, how good does Windows ME really manage your RAM?? I have my norton system doctor open and my Physical memory sensor up and everytime I open a program it goes down, and when I close the program, the PM does not restore. I can tell the loss in performance in games even without the NSD open.(after my computer has been on for a while and I have opened and closed several programs) Does ME have bad RAM management or is it just me? Would an upgrade to XP definately be worth it in this area? will I see a difference if I do upgrade to XP?

hello
the ram dose tend to fill up with left over memory usesage from programs you have shut down. rebooting solves it.some times this problem is called a memory leak in m.e .

Well, WinME is not the best in memory management, true... win2k is much better, actually, most NT versions are better in that field. But then again it all depends on what you want to do with your pc. Win2k has its inconvenients too and vice-versa..
And most Norton products are memory and ressources hogs.

If you have 512Mb of RAM, you should not experience problems. However, for a whole lot of reasons, it is recommended to reboot after using a game with ME. And, it is NOT Windows ME that causes a problem with return of either RAM or system resources - it is badly written software which you have running on Windows ME. Properly written programs run properly on ME.

And, as response 2 said, do not leave System Doctor running when you are using your PC. It causes a whole heap of problems. Only use it now and again for diagnostic purposes. The best way to use Norton Utilities or Systemworks is to leave System Doctor off and when you want to do a cleanup use WinDoctor, DiskDoctor and SpeedDisk in that order.
