Back-up disks

In October, Gateway reformatted our hard drive and we paid extra for them to back up data on CDs. When I put a CD in, stuff just starts flying and I can't even tell what it is or what's going on. Should I reboot, F8 and get into DOS? Would I then be able to pick and choose things from these disks? Would I be able to tell what's even on them? Thanks so much and sorry for my ignorance.

What exactly do you mean by "stuff just starts flying?"
How are you accessing the CDs? Are you going through My Computer, or through Windows Explorer?

Put the CD in the tray, press and hold down the 'SHIFT KEY'(arrow in bottom lefthand corner of keyboard), then close the CD tray while keeping this key pressed. This will disable the autorun feature. You can then go to MY COMPUTER - D:\ drive and view the contents of the CD. If you wanted to put files back onto your PC, you can copy and paste them to the folder of your choice.
