Comment:

Win 95 & 2000 both have a facility for backing up files to disk. I've just got Win Me installed and there appears to be no such programme.

I searched the Microsoft sites looking for a download but no luck.

Does anyone know where I can get this or in fact does it exist? Also could the Win 98 version be loaded onto my computer from the Win 98 CD which I still have?

Thanks if you can help

Browse your ME disk. There's an add-on on it for the MS backup.

How do you browse the ME disk to locate back up and add it to your listed programs from programs start up. It is there in 98 very clearly but apparently hidden in ME. Guess, you are not supposed to ever use it? which raises the question, what would you use it for SAFELY?

Put in the Windows ME disk.
It should autorun.
Click on Browse this cd.
Find the folder named "Add ons"
Double click on the add ons folder.
In there you will find MSbackup.exe and a readme.txt.
Read the readme and install MSBackup.

If the cd does not autorun...
Put in the ME disk.
Double click on My Computer.
Right click on your cd rom drive.
Choose explore.
Find the "add ons" folder that way.

What do you mean by "SAFELY"?

Thanks Newgirl, but, another question. Could
Backup be transfered from MS 98 to a floppy by a 98 user and then loaded onto ME easily
I have friends using 98 and if this could be done, it would simplify adding to backup folder I have but is not loaded.

I honestly don't know if you can use the msbackup from 98 on an ME box.

Check the version number on the one your friend has. The ME version is 4.71.1015.

As far as a floppy goes... The application is 1.36MB. Make sure you use a freshly formatted floppy without anything else on it. A freshly formatted floppy will hold 1.38MB of data, so it will be a tight squeeze.

Some things to check anyway.

If you want to try it... and you are still using System restore... just set a manual restore point by going to start>>programs>>accessories>>system tools>>system restore. Then, if it doesn't work out, you can just restore back.

It's a pretty simple program. I don't think it's going to hose your box or anything... I'm just not sure if it will work.

I have the exact same problem. Only, I don't have an ME disk; it was installed on the computer when I bought it. The only disks that I got were the Restore CD disks provided by eMachines. There's no folder called add-ons, no msbackup, no msbexp - just recovery and driver programs. Can I use some other program to backup my computer?

Thanks

I'm in similar situation as Betty, as my factory loaded machine only came with Reinstallation CD. Now, can anyone tell me what "System Restore" does? WMe official site says its like rolling back the clock and allow you to set your compute back to a time when it was working without incident. Hmmm, could this be a substitute for backup? Your feedback would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Has anyone solved this problem yet? I am in the same situation--a preinstalled OS with restore disks but no stand-alone Windows me. Is it possible to download msbackup.exe or msbexp.exe anywhere? I find no mention on the Microsoft site except one page saying that the oem version of Windows me doesn't include it. Thanks.

You can download the backup installation program msbexp.exe from

http://www.clip.com/dwnlds.htm

After downloading, double click on the msbexp.exe to install the backup program, if you get the error message that mfc42.dll is not available, point the search to C:\windows\options\install where the .cab file is located.

It worked for me!

THANK YOU Bryan. I was stuck with 500 MB of files I was unable to access without Msbackup. Re the error message mfc42.dll is located in \windows\options\cab on my oem installation.

You can use msbackup from win98 according to microsoft and I tried it. It does work but you have to do a few things first. located in the \program files\accessories\backup\system folder are a ton of dll files that will need to be copied to the \windows\system directory. once they are in place return to the \program files\accessories\backup directory and run the backup program. Good Luck!
