Computer freezes frequently when click on start for log off or shut down. Back web agent appears at top of end task command.
Does anyone know what this is and does it need to be removed ?
Advice would be appreciated.

Backweb is a program used by HP and possibly Compaq, that searches for updated drivers for your hardware. it's not needed and can be eliminated from start up by running msconfig.

Backweb is a very stubborn program and often comes back despite being removed from startup. It's best to permanently remove it by using Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel. From the number of files pertaining to Backweb I found on my computer, I suspect it is more like spyware than something helpful. It is a cause of many people's internet freeze problems. You can still check for updates manually if you ever feel the need to.

I removed backweb once from my compaq. I found out later that netscape wouldn't work right without it. Removing backweb didn't seem to effect internet explorer.

I installed Netscape after uninstalling Backweb and it works fine. I wonder if Backweb had intertwined itself so tightly with your Netscape that uninstalling it damaged Netscape somehow. It seems like the longer Backweb stays on a system, the more files it creates. I had to get rid of it so I could access the internet without freezing up.

By the way, the reinstallation instructions say to use recovery disk 2. However, if you have 3 disks, it is on disk 3. Make sure to read all the info on the web page as it gives instructions on how to manually turn the feature on or off.

Ger: Followed those instructions to re-install HP updates ( after removing) and the recovery disk will display nothing in window.
Tried both recovery disk 2 and 3 and still nothing appears even after shutting down and waiting 30 seconds as instructed.
What am I missing here as dont want to use system restore to reenable HP updates.
Thanks in advance.

I tried it on my computer just to see if it would work. You shouldn't have to shut the computer off at all. I just put recovery disk 3 ( it's labeled "application recovery") in and closed the cd drawer and the cd spun up and a menu popped up about 20 seconds later asking which HP applications I would like to restore. Just make sure the disk says application recovery, not system recovery, and keep the computer turned on until the program is reinstalled and it asks you if you would like to restart now.

Tried that too using HP application recovery disc 3 and nothing. The disk light( on hard drive) remained amber instead of green so wonder if another problem. You could hear the disc spin but bsolutely nothing would come up on screen.
Will prevail on your help once more to try and resolve this. Do any others have a solution?
Many thanks all.

I would try the Add/Remove Programs option in the Control Panel. Click the Install button at the top (To install a new program ...) while the application disk is in the cdrom. Windows should then begin the installation.

Tried that too but nothing will come up even using install command in control panel as you suggested. Tried C:\ProgramFiles\BackWeb\BackWeb search and replied not locatable. Sending e-mail to HP ffor advice. Now, I wonder do I really need HP updates and back web agent? Some would say not? Could use system restore but should not have to.

I haven't missed backweb at all. As I recall, none of the updates I received from HP in the past were for anything important anyway. Microsoft updates are the ones to be most concerned about. Guess you'll have to see what kind of reply HP comes up with. They should at least offer you a new application recovery disk if the one you have isn't working. Hope your system recovery disks work in case you ever have to reinstall Windows.

Thanks much Ger:
May not even wish to re-install HP updates if they send me new recovery disk but would like to have just in case. I removed back web agent in the first place because I thought it was causing freezes. Havent had any since removal but will wait and see.
UYou have been a great help and thanks.

Just for the heck of it, you could try putting the cd in and opening up My Computer. If you double click on your cd drive that's listed in My Computer it should at least be able to tell you if there is anything on the cd.

Thanks again Ger:
Inserted recovery disc, clicked om my computer then CD rom drive.
It displayed name of recovery disc but nothing would come up. Believe its up to HP to resolve now. Also disabled firewall before trying.
Anyway, thanks for great advice!
