Hello guys, there is people there in the Win98 forum who is actually going back to win 3.1, I am thinking of making a partition with win 3.1 in my winME machine:
- I think MS used to put more quality in their products back then when they were actually struggling in the OS market.
- The programs in those days were much less demanding and I’d love to see how a PIII handles them

I’d like to hear what you guys have to say.
thanks

I hated Windows 3.1. It always locked up my computer whenever I tried any CD that had any multimedia demo at all, and It crashed all the time since it was a program that ran on top of DOS and was only 16 bit instead of 32 bit. You couldn't use more than 8 characters when you named your files, and the system recources ran out quikly if you had more than two progams opened. When I installed a full version of Windows 95 on this computer it solved all may problems mentioned above. Three years ago I bought a new system with Win98, and most the time it ran pretty good, but sometimes it would lock up, show error messages, and have missing dll's. Most of this was my fault as I really pushed Windows 98 with lots of shareware downloads, deletions etc. I cleaned my hardrive last Christmas, installed my restore disk, and put Win Me on. Even though I am not thrilled with Win Me, or would even find enough new features to recomend it to any one, it did make my system run smother, my games play smother and the system file protection feature helps keep my system from crashing, or showing any error messages. My opion--stick with Windows 98 if it is working for you, as it really is a much better operating system than Win 3.1, and if you have Win Me on your system and working ok, stick with that. But if you want to go back to Win 3.1 and do without USB support, FAT32 file system, long file names, good support for 3d gaming, and better system recource management than be my guest.

A misconception is trying to get launched here. The FAT 12 file system--8 letter filename a dot and three letter extension--is a table of contents. It has nothing to do with 16 bits. In fact if it had followed the 16 bit model there would have been 12 letters for the filename, a dot and three letters for the extension. That the 16 bit model was not followed suggests to me that Long filenames were in the planning stages even then and we were not to get too comfortable.
