A well meaning friend unistalled AVG v7. with it went the USB mouse and the screen reverted to 640 and 16 clours. any help would be appreciated

Your friend must have uninstalled more than just AVG7. Sounds like your USB drivers are gone, along with your video display drivers. Simply reinstall them.

I agree ,have never heard of AVG changing anything like that and I use it with ME without a problem for like 3 years now...If you use ME or XP try using a previous restore point....
