data cd? is it an autorun cd? burned data cd's storing files generally do not open up automatically. you will need to browse the drive as you would your hardrive using windows explorer. Also, if it is an application cd try ejecting it then reinserting it. i have noticed that after isntalling applications from a cdrom and restarting it sometimes just sits quietly rather than attempting to autorun. this plays a role when ever there are more than one applications on a given cd that need to be indivudally installed.

I am running WinME on a Pentium 3 850 MHz with 128MRam. The DVD-drive actually automatically launched the CD, but after changing that for some installation, I was unable to go back to the previous settings : check or uncheck the auto insert notification, the CD does not come up automatically anymore. This has nothing to do with the CD, the number of times I try to insert it. It sounds like a bug.

Has anyody an idea to fix this buggy behaviour ??

Go to start>>run>>regedit.
Browse to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\CDRom
When you open that folder, on the left hand side, there should be a value for AutoRun.

If it says 0x00000000(0)... then your computer is set to NOT autorun.
Double click on AutoRun and chage the value field to 1.

Close the registry editor.
Reboot.

Try your cd/dvd now.

For reference:
