Autoexec.com & Config.sys

Comment:
I prefer to have numlock set to off after booting. In my Windows 98 machine, all I did was put NUMOFF in my autoexec.bat. In my Windows ME machine it has a program called ESSOLO.COM in both the Autoexec.bat & the Config.sys. I tried to put NUMLOCK=OFF in the config.sys and also in the Autoexec.bat file. When I re-boot, and look at either one, the entries are not longer there, and the file with them in is re-named .bak! I think the ESSOLO.COM must be redoing the file and changing the new ones to .BAT or .SYS Any idea's on how I can fix this will be appreciated!

Usually in the system BIOS settings there is an option for boot-up numlock status, have a look there and see if you can change it.

I agree with above. The files config.sys and autoexec.bat are not processed during startup with WinMe. The files are still available in the root folder, but they are hidden from view and modified: Config.sys is stripped completely and autoexec.bat is given a few Set statements for compatibility. The way WinMe handles config.sys and autoexec.bat is to watch for changes to these files from older setup programs. The next time you start Windows, it removes the new settings from the files, discards whatever isn't needed and stores the rest in the Registry. The reason it is handled this way is that Microsft wanted to break with the past and has eliminated real mode support on WinMe.
