I'm using WinME which came when i bought my system. Recently something happened and my display, audio and mouse did not work. I restored my video drivers and extracted vmouse.vxd.
Now the only problem left is with my audio drivers. I installed the drivers from the manufacturer CD and added the lines
wave=mmsystem.dll
midi-mmsystem.dll
into system.ini but i still get the error under "Sounds and Multimedia/Devices" that "Driver is enabled but inactive due to an unknown problem."I managed to install these drivers successfully before but now am unable to do so. My card is C-Media CM8738 built into the motherboard. Please help. Thx

Did you already try removing your sound card from device manager and rebooting to see if windows will redetect it and reinstall it?

Yes i did completely remove everything from device manager. But when i reboot, it being a PnP device, Windows ME just reinstalls it without asking me for any CD or location.
The problem is still not solved. I've tried downloading drivers from the net, updating the drivers from device managers to the ones from my CD but it doesn't help.

Make sure it's not something simple. Check Sounds in the Control Panel and make sure Mute is not checked.

Hi,
I recently istalled Windows ME on my Petnium II computer and when i did, i lost my sound, now i have no sound at all...i think that windows ME may not be detecting my sound card so i may have to download some new drivers but the problem is that i dont know what drivers to download and i dont know how to find out the name of my sound card, i know it has something to do with PCI soundblaster , if that means anything.To give u a little information about my computer,all i can tell u is that it has an Azura monitor and the hard drive is an avalon personal computer...so if any of u out there have any suggestions for me please let me know, u can write at jacintagillard@hotmail.com, thank you.

Back to my problem... Under Sounds and Multimedia/Audio there is no prefered devices to choose as the box is disabled. So i don't think it's the mute button.
Jacinta, you could try Driver Dective found on this site (the link is on the left) or you could open up your computer and take a look at your sound card. If the brand is not there a model number should be present. Go to Google or some other search engine and search for it.

In your system.ini file, under the [boot] section... make sure you have:
drivers=mmsystem.dll
If you do not, the sound and video card may not initialize and will cause errors.

Thanks newgirl but I have already added that line. There's another line in my system.ini that is:
drivers=power.drv
I added
drivers=mmsystem.dll
under that but ut didn't help either.How is is that such errors can happen out of nowhere. WinME just suddenly fail like this. Or is this a Microsoft trend? :)

Ok thanks, I've fixed the problem.
just posting so anyone with such problems in the future can refer. What i did was in system.ini under the [boot] section, removed the line:
drivers=power.drv
and replaced it with:
drivers=mmsystem.dll
just as newgrl said. Out of curiosity, what causes such problems anyway?

Hi ,
its me again,Jacinta. I've tried to find some drivers in the driver detective link but it doesn't seem to load properly when i click on sound card drivers so o guess that idea it out..thnx for he idea though. Anyhow, I have another question, How am i suppose to know which card is my sound card when i look inside the pc? I know that's there's suppose to be a wire coming from the back of the cd rom to the sound card but I cant seen to find one. So maybe i have onboard sound or something. and if i do have onboard sound, how am i suppose to find drivers for that??? It all to confusing. If anybody has any suggestions , please do let me know. Thank you.

Jacinta, start your own thread so someone can see your problem.
On back of your PC...where do the speakers connect?
Is it on one of the PCI cards or near the power cord?
This should help determine if its integrated or not.

Sorry, shutMEuporDowm, i didn't mean to but in on your page, i didn't realize i had to start my own. I will do that now,thnx.

i had installed win me.my sound card is cm8738.i installed the latest drivers from the net but didnt work.Can anyone help me .
