Att to surfers who use dial-up modem to access internet.

When clicking on IE icon on the desktop, you'll find a "Connet to" windows, asking you to enter username and password. Below "password" textbox, there're two checkboxes, which enable to remember password and connect automatically. Normally, these two are unchecked but enabled. For my situation, since both the checkboxes are disabled (i can't check the boxes), i have to enter the password whenever i access to internet. Can anyone help so that the two checkboxes are enabled? I'm using WinME.

Hi

This should resolve your problem. Make sure you have the Win ME disk or cab files on your hard drive.

1. Go to Control Panel> Network. The minimum you need is Client for Microsoft Networks, Dial Up Adapter, and Tcp/Ip. Make sure Primary Network Logon is set to Client for Microsoft Networks. If Client for Microsoft Networks is not listed then click on ADD>Client>Microsoft ( left hand side ). By default Client for Microsoft Networks should be highlighted. Click OK on that screen and the Network screen and click Yes when prompted to restart.

VERY IMPORTANT
You should get a Windows Logon screen that prompts you for a Username and Password. If the Username is blank enter a name. You can leave the password field blank if you don't want that screen to appear everytime. Click OK. If it prompts you again Click Ok. What this does is it enables Windows to create a password file.

See if you can select to Save the password in the dun connection. If so, great !!!

If not,

Remove Client for Microsoft Networks in Control Panel>Network. Restart the computer and add Client for Microsoft Networks again and restart. Test again.

If that does not work, you may have a corrupt password file (.pwl). Do a search for *.pwl. Look for a .pwl file that has the username you see when Windows starts. Delete that .pwl file and restart the computer. Test again.

If that does not work then search for a .pwl file that matches the Windows username and delete it if there is one and then go to Control Panel>Network and remove Client for Microsoft Networks and restart the computer. Add the client again and restart. Test again.

Usually this problem is solved in the first 3 steps. If you have been clicking cancel on the Windows logon screen then Windows never had the chance to make a password file. There are a couple other things that can cause this but these instructions should solve it 99% of the time.

Good Luck

BTW if removing Client for Microsoft also removes TCP/IP you may get a message stating that your network is not complete..do you want to proceed ? Click Yes or OK.

Once the computer has restarted you can add TCP/IP from Control Panel>Network>Add>Protocol>Microsoft>TCP/IP.

You may also want to check the TCP/IP properties before removing the Client and record the settings.
