ASPI

The ASPI layer (Advanced SCSI Programmer's Interface) is part of the operating systems Windows 95 and
Windows 98. This software layer consists of four files:

windows\system\wnaspi32.dll
windows\system\winaspi.dll
windows\system\iosubsys\apix.vxd
windows\system\aspienum.vxd

The ASPI layer may be deleted or damaged however by a different software or various drivers, making it
incompatible with your software/hardware environment. In that case, please check the version numbers of
the four files by a right mouse click on the files and choose Properties>Version. All four version numbers
should be the same. If this is not the case, you can extract the original files from your Windows CAB files.

A second possibility to restore the ASPI layer is to download ASPI_ME from Steve Gibson. This is interesting
for NT 4.0 users as ASPI here is not part of the operating system. Since 1997, Microsoft no longer supports
ASPI, the official interface now is the SCSI Pass Through Interface (SPTI). Up to now, only one CD recording
program, Feurio, is working with this possibility.

ASPI_ME by Steve Gibson is a current freeware ASPI layer which was programmed in Assembler and offers
many more possibilities than that from Adaptec (that one is from 1997).

Thanx for the response, it seems out of the four files you have listed my system does not have the last one aspienum.vxd and one of my buddies puter with ME is missing this also, is this an inherent fact of winME??? Or are we just the only ones missing this file.......I have posted a link to the utility that checks your aspi layer...I would appreciate some additional responses.THANX

I am having the same problem with EZCD on win ME. I used the Forceaspi 1.7 and the problem persists. Has anyone found a solution to this?

The ASPI files listed above are from Windows 98... not from ME. Windows ME does not include an ASPI layer. Find a friend with 98 or if you still have 98 lying around somewhere, and copy those 4 files to the proper directories. The date on all these files should be 9-10-99.
