Using ME and AOL 6

Can connect to aol fine and even check mail sending/receiving ok.

Cannot browse webpages with aol browser.

Had previously installed msn but could never get that to work so went back to aol...aol said that msn probably messed up some settings.

Any suggestions on how to get aol web browsing to work again.

do not have ME disk...bought comp. from friend and everything was installed.

Hi Cindy. I would just try reinstalling aol. You can get an AOL cd practically anywhere.

Cindy, go into aol tech chat, there is a BIG list of things for them to run thru with you.

This list is known as ..."The BIG list to run thru with people".

Failing that you will probably get more joy by upgrading (LOL ;):)) to aol 7.
The name of the game is to coerse you into useing their latest FABULOUS software.

Try the above,
Kind regards.....Batman (without Robin)

Cindy,

I had this problem some time ago when I was on AOL 6, you haven't said, but if your on IE 5 this can cause the problem, you will need 5.5 to go browsing, if you already have 5.5 then it's the BIG room for you girl as suggested :))

Can you browse with Internet Explorer?

Can you ping by friendly name?

Do this:

Connect to AOL.
Go to start>>run>>command.
Click ok.
In the MS-DOS window that pops up type:

ping 209.90.0.4

Notice the Packets sent and packets received line.

Post the results here.

Now type:

ping sky.net

Note the packets sent and received lines again and post them here.

If you get 4 replies on the 209.90.0.4 and an error "unknown host" or 0 packets received on sky.net, do the "winsock fix":

Go to start>>settings>>control panel.
Double click add/remove programs.
Go to the Windows setup tab.
Uncheck Communications.
Click apply>>ok.
It will ask you to reboot.

DO NOT REBOOT.

Leave up the control panel, you will be back to it.
Go to start>>run>>regedit.
At the top of the registry editor click on Registry>>export registry file.
Call it backup and save it somewhere you can find it.
Make sure the Export Range is set to ALL.
Click save.

Now... browse to and delete each of these folders on the left hand side of the registry:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\VXD\AFVXD

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\VXD\DHCP

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\VXD\MSTCP

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\VXD\Winsock

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\VXD\Winsock2

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Winsock

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\WinSock2

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\RemoteAccess
\Authentication\SMM_Files

Close the registry editor.

Go back to control panel>>add/remove programs>>windows setup tab.
Highlight Communications.
Click the Details button.
Put a checkmark in Dial Up Networking.
Click ok>>apply>>ok.
It will ask you to reboot.

This time... REBOOT.

The reinstall of Dial Up Networking will rewrite these folders in the registry.

When you get back up, try to connect and browse.

If... doing the ping tests... you can ping both by IP and friendly name (get 4 replies on both), then do not do the above instructions. They will most likely not help. Just post back.

If you can browse with Internet Explorer...just uninstall and reinstall AOL. Their browser is broken.

This is a common problem with AOL as they alter the above registry keys to work with their AOL dial up adapters. AOL actually uses a modified version of IPX/SPX(as opposed to TCP/IP) to connect you to their mail and internal sites. This is the reason you can get your mail, but not surf the web.

If you have any questions... just post back.

Just go back to AOL and download AOL 7.0. Change the name of your existing AOL folder to AOLa or something, Install the new AOL and you should be good to go.
