Whats left for us ME users as far as free AV ? The only ones I can find is Avast and Bit Defender that appears to still support ME. Is one better than the other ? I used to use AVG which I love but with them coming out with version 8.0 ME is no longer supported. I had upgraded to XP but was having too many problems so i went back to ME and what a difference , its fast again , everything works again .

You can still find AVG 7.5 if you search the Grisoft website. As long as updates are forthcoming it should/will still be fine to use. Can't say which of the two you mentioned is better.I say do a google search and then search the results that come up for ME compatibility.

Sorry, no more updates for AVG 7.5. From my experience, AVAST! is a resource hog & bogs down the system. I haven't try Bit Defender yet. Another possibilty is ClamWin, but it doesn't include a real-time scanner.

what do you use your computer for and, what type of internet do you use?
you have the specs to run XP and, if you don't want to spend money, your machine could run many different linux distros.

I had upgraded to XP and I could not get the optical drives to keep working correctly and could not find any xp drivers for them so I went back to ME . XP was constantly running 40-50% cpu and also my tv card would not work correctly and i had upgraded the tv program and driver but still would not work right. So I will run ME until I feel I need a new one . I am running Avast at this point and it doesn't seem to be slowing anything down at this point and everything is working the way it should including the tv card and Cd/rom and DVD/rom drives. I hear that windows 7 is supposed to be out by the end of next year so maybe after that I will think about upgrading the pc with something newer , this one is circa 2001 .

You don't need to install drivers for optical drives...they're included in the OS. If you couldn't get them to work correctly, the problem is/was elsewhere. My guess is you have the both on the same cable/channel? If so, that could be the problem right there.

I feel like older machines, like yours, still running Me or 98, are ideal for dual booting some version of linux.

I find Avast so light on resources I don't notice any difference in boot times or operation before or after it is installed.

Don't know about WinME, but AVG was a much bigger resource hog than Avast on WinXP. And ClamWin has to be initiated (rather than scanning for live-accessed files). Either way, updates for AVG 7.5 should be here:

I had received a popup message from AVG about a month ago....same as this one:

I upgraded to 8.0 & am not thrilled with it. Anyhow, I did some searching & found that the expiration date for 7.5 updates has been extended to 12/31/08.

Avast! didn't work well for me on low spec Win9x/ME systems such as K6-2 w/128MB RAM but it *may* run OK with 933MHz/392MB...definitely worth a shot.

Does anyone have any thoughts on BitDefender?

So far Avast seems to be working fine without much of a load on the system . Also the cpu is generally less than 5% where as when I had XP installed it was always running 50% .
