I would like to know which Anti Virus Software is best for Windows Me. I tried Norten Antivirus 2002 but it jammed my computer several times. Then I tried AVG 6.0 from grisoft.com, which also did not work satisfactorily.

When we load anti virus software onto our computer, then it prompts us to make rescue disk(s). Shall we use those rescue disk(s) to reload the systems files of Windows which seem to have been corrupted by the anti virus program? Is this action sufficient to run Windows 9X/ME smoothly again as it was before loading the anti virus into our computer.

The AVG runs fine, its the Nortons that screwed up the files, see if you can restore to before you installed Nortons then install AVG. When you uninstall Nortons, they leave files behind, then when you installed AVG it probably goofed up, if you can not restore uninstall AVG and all traces of Nortons +Symantec then reinstall AVG. I agree with Sue,
All Norton products have really gone downhill in the last year or so.I think there are instructions on the Symantec site on how to rid yourself of there products. If not do a search on Google.
AVG is not your issue.

This is from PC World, September 2001:

"WE DIDN'T RUN into much trouble installing any of the programs, although Symantec’s Norton AntiVirus was the hardest utility to install--it required a disruptive restart midway through the process and another restart to install the updates....

"Norton AntiVirus was difficult to remove from our test systems because its uninstaller leaves traces of the program on the hard drive. That can be a problem: Some antivirus programs will refuse to install if there is even the slightest trace of another one still on your PC.

"Panda Antivirus Platinum 6.23 is the undisputed champ."

$30 to download.

To get rid of all traces of Norton, use RegCleaner from http://www.jv16.org/

I agree with most of the above as far as Norton not being a good system, however I will add that if you have a Dell system, you better leave Norton where it is and just disable it. Dell has some kind of cooperation with Symantec, incorporating their software into the Dell HELP system. I tried to uninstall Norton, and much of my system quick working. I look forward to eliminating the Dell crud and doing a clean install of XP.

Use Reg-cleaner and the search/find on the start menu and enter Norton,Symantecs and any other key words to do with the Anti virus and delete them, that is how I got rid of a "trial" piece of Norton, might try free anti virus at http://www.free-av.com/ this is what I have been using and have caught 2 trojan's thus far and it is free!! good luck and hope this helps you out.

Hello everyone,

I use Norton Antivirus 2001 and It works just fine with my millenium (but who knows, maybe there are like 5 trojans on my comp and it's not detecting them!!). I think it has a lot to do with what system you use. You should keep trying till you find the one that works best on your system, and works best for you :o)

FYI I have Norton System Works 2002. I use Disk Doctor, Win Doctor, Speed Disk, all of which I like very much. Speed disk is MUCH better than Windows Defrag. I run Norton Anti-Virus from its own icon/command line because I have never been able to run NAV from within System Works itself, although NAV seems to do it's job.

I had to use RegCleaner to get the remnants of System Works 2001 off my system before I could install 2002; and it puts icons everywhere without asking. It's on the Explorer toolbar next to the address bar, and that that doesn't work either. (Anybody know how I can get that off?)

I also am currently using Inoculate IT Personal Edition, at least until the support runs out on May 15th.

Use system mechanic to clean your registry I have a dell pc and system mechanic took all traces of norton off the system. And I agree with Sue AVG is a good antivirus but with nortons traces it is corrupted. I strongly suggest you uninstall both of them restore from your disk then run system mechanic and reinstall AVG you can find the mechanic at www.iolo.com (30 day trialware)
