I have decided that I need to in vest in a new mother board and processor as mine is getting past it. But I don't know which are better Intel or AMD I want a good reliable processor with speed I need it for games, word processing etc, and to be able to surf the net and also for my music. I currently have an AMD K-6 2 3D now 500mhz which has been a great processor but I want more. So what do u think?

Presently AMD is kicking Intel ass.
Their new 1800/1900 appears to be very impressive (according to most reviews).AMD, less costly and a real solid performer.

I have same processor you have, and if I upgrade I will stay with the AMD.Intell and AMD both make a good processor, but I think you pay a bit more for the intell name.

Just finished installing an athlon xp 1800 on a msi k7t266 pro2. Still have some tweaking to do but it is doing good on the benchmarks I've run. I think the price difference between the two is getting smaller though. I think it depends on what you feel comfortable with. This is the fourth amd processor I've had and I really have had good results with them. You can get the 1800 with a good fan for about $230 at pricewatch. Motherboard about $120. Might as well go to pc2100 memory too. I bought a 512 mb Muskin chip. Crucial is good too. Depending on what you want it should cost $40-100. Total that up and you'll see what you're in for. But it was fun and beats paying $2000 for one off the shelf.

Get the Asus A7266-E with DDR memory. And the AMD 1900+ Processor. You wont need to upgrade for a long time. Intel Is a good processor but in the same class the AMD is less expensive and usually out performs intel.

I'll add my tuppence worth, and concur. AMD is the one to go for and agree that the XP 1900 is proving to be the one to go for if you can afford it. If not, go for the the 1500.
I personally am still on a T-bird 1200, and hasn't complained at being overclocked to 1400 at all either. But from what I have read in the reviews, you shouldn't need to o/c the XP as it outperforms everything else out there, including the P4 2Ghz.

Where are all the Intel people? A while back this would have caused quite a debate in this forum. They'll probably say they have no problems and no need to be in here. Come on, where's the old fire?

I'm running an even 1G TBird on a KT7A and love this thing to death! Video editing is where things slow down alittle but other fun stuff (Photoshop, MP3 crunching etc) are no problemo. My suggestion would be to get all the power you can afford if you plan on doing any sort of video editing. This hobby hits the CPU between the legs big time! No less than a 1G processor IMHO.
The move to a 1G+ machine will be a nice surprise for you too. I moved from a Celeron 500/Abit mobo combination and am still thrilled after 3 months or so :) Lots of deals to be had at PriceWatch. Check EBay too only after you know your items price range. I see stuff sell there for *higher* than what you could find it for using PriceWatch on a regular basis.
I also prefer to stay behind the times at around 6 months to a year just to get those deals. No need to be on the cutting edge when a GIG CPU (AMD of course) will do what you want it to do most of the time. Again DV editing and other CPU intensive tasks take all the horsepower you can toss at it.
My next machine will be a nice ABit/xp1900 combo and will be made Xpecially to churn out MPEG's - home video, old Star Trek episodes - "That 70's Show" VCD's to run over and over again :)
Sorry to get so windy here - I'm just STOKED! as these are exciting times with mega power, memory, HD's etc being so darn cheap! Heck, build your own personal juke box for the living room - just how many MP3's can you store on an 80G HD anyhow ....
With that, I'll end with a big thumbs up for the AMD/ABit products. Benchmarks show they are as healthy as Intel at a much nicer price. Get on over to Pricewatch.com and start kickin around some prices :)
Bob
PS - at a GIG plus, don't skimp on the FAN! Especially if you opt for a 1.4G or better - these CPU's make some heat - install that temp warning progy to let you know when fan speeds, temps go outta tolerable limits - just my other 2 cents ..... enjoy :)

I've used both and am happy with AMD's but have just one question. Why do you never see servers using AMD's? I mean mainstream servers.
