This site is worse than smoking. I can't seem to stay away.
I have a plan I think will save me some time, but I may be asking for trouble.
First I am going to save all the items that are in my computing.net list to my desktop. Then I am going to move them all to folders by topic. The only choice I saw was as a HTML file. Then I will sort of have my own database.
Second I am going to download all the progams that I need or might need in the future. I am going to save all of these (hopefully zipped) in folders by catagory.
Is this a waste of time and a possible problem down the road?
I am known around town for doing things the hard way.

Thanks,

Noel Taylor

Hi,
I dont think I would call it trouble so much as I would call it a big pain in the rump.
The site is already stored and searchable and most all software worth having will be there when and IF you ever need it.
Seems like it may be a hard drive hog just more files to back up in case of total disaster.

MyComputing.net is a great place to store links but i usually just save each link in my favorites/computing.net folder. I guess having both covers you.

As for downloaded programs. I always keep the setup files then burn them to cd-r. Most software is updated so much it doesnt really make sense i guess. And i agree with jimi that most of it will be there when-if you need it. Im usually on dialup and having those setups already on disk sure does save some time :).

I have so far 32 back-up programs/applications on my desk top in a folder. The idea being I can save them periodically to disc. Each prog is saved in a folder (& in a folder again) with the version number, web address & which OS it will run on and a homemade help file. If the progs help file could only be accessed after the prog was installed you would be in trouble if it said.. WHAT EVER YOU DO, INSTALL ON A MAC ONLY!
As it's written by me for people like me (newbies to use the expression) I think it's a good idea if only to use it as a reference for myself. They have been obtained mainly from downloads and magazine cover CD's.
