hey hows it going?
can someone pls help me out. i think its related to kazza, cuz it happened straight after kazza froze.
all my icons on my desktop either show an unknown file icon or text document icon.
all the shortcuts have become text doc icons and remaining unknown file. also shortcuts in other folders have changed.
i restarted computer several times still made no difference.
im worried that it may be a virus. can someone please help me out. not sure if this is related to kazza.
otherwise the computers works ok

No guarantee, but I would try deleting your "shelliconcache" file, and rebooting. If you can't find it in a search, make sure you have the "show all hidden files and folders" selaected in Control Panel/Folder Options/View tab.Don't worry,Windows will rebuild/re-create it upon reboot.Let us know please.Your file associations might have also gotten screwed up...if the above doesn't work, get back, and we'll be able to fix that,I believe. When will people learn NOT to download Kazaa? It is complete junk.

if this has happened within the 5 day span of the default setting for scanreg.

in windows me you can goto RUN and type

scanreg /restore
that's scanreg space /restore

then restore a registry from before this and hopefully and installs that may have caused this.

my thinking is that it's the icons listing for your extensions that may have been messed up.

does it say this on shutdown?

scanreg shouldn't be the cause of this error.

you can also run scanreg in dos with a boot disk.

I'd suggest you try restoring the registry soon or it will be to late to tell if that was the problem.
unless you want to use regedit
since by default scanreg store 5 backups.
one each day.
although there may be other way to repair a damaged registry.
this is the easiest.

also by the sound of things you have more than one problem.

check the device manager see if your external devices look ok.

I have a similar problem... possibly also related to Kazaa crashing on Win ME today. Something has mixed up all my .txt and .doc icons, using the Google and Ghostscript icons in place of the correct ones. I'll update on the developments...

The problem was fixed when I used the Win ME system restore to return to a previous state from a few hours earlier.
