I have the freeware program ad-aware 6.0 ,installed and run it evertime i log off the internet ! When Iam doing a little cleaning up of my H.D. ,I do a search on .log files ,to see if I have any and if they are needed, then I place them in the recycle bin. Well to my amazment ,Ad-aware saves a .log file everytime you run a scan , and the .log file is a little over 500K.B. each. After you have several of these ,the amount of space its taking up on the H.D. starts to become significant, depending on the size of your drive. If you have Ad-aware ,go thru the settings and remove the check mark from the "automatically save as a log file" . If you where not aware(excuse the pun) of these log files ,do a H.D. search for*.log and see what comes up ,delete what you dont want !

I have completed the *.log search. How do I know which can be deleted without problems? Thanks for helping a novice.

From my exprience most log files are safe to delete . I keep some of them because of the info they hold ,like setup.log or my modems lod file etc. Even those ,which by the way open in notepad ,you can sdit out the older input to down size the .log file. Just like temp files , as a general rule all .log files can be deleted. If you are not sure when deleting any file ,leave it in your recycle bin for a couple of weeks to make sure removing it does not cause any problems. Also after you delete it to the recycle bin run the application its related to ,you may find it willl create a new log file , that why its always a good idea to clean out your H.D. every so often . This is a lit of other files that are "safe to delete" >bad = registry files that the system marks as bad
bak = duplicate (backup) files
chk = ScanDisk disk error files
dmp = memory dump files
fts = temporary files recreated by Windows as needed
gid = help files search data
old = copy of older version
prv = log files created by past windows boot-ups
syd = temporary backup files
tmp = temporary files
*.$*= temporary files
*.~*= temporary files
~*.*= temporary files
*.??~=temporary files
mscreate.dir = creates folders during installations
These are files that are listed in one registry cleaner as “unnecessary” (which duplicate some of the files already listed):
“These files are mainly backups, temporary and other unuseable files: *.tmp, ~*.*, *.~*, *.?~?, *.aps, *.bak, *.bk?, *.bsc, *.dmp, *.ilk, *.pch, *.rws, *.sbr, backup*.wbk, *.$$$, *.ncb, *.~mp, *.old, *.da0, *.chk." [This registry cleaner] can also search for these files: "*.fts, *.gid, *.mtx, *.nch, *.ftg, *.$db, *.db$. *. NCH are created when you read newsgroups with Microsoft Outlook. *.MTX files are created when a scanner-device is used. *.GID files are created when you execute *.HLP files. Usage of these files is currently quite unknown, but these files are still save to delete. You get mainly temporary free disk space when you delete these, because programs (or scanners) create these again when executed.”
Good Luck Nick
