There are some problems with my active desktop.

I tried to set my new wallpaper and the message showed me that I have to enable the active desktop. When I clicked ok, it said:

"Internet explorer cannot find the Active Desktop HTML file, this file is needed for your active desktop."

What am I supposed to do?

Lakshu,

Exactly what version of Internet Explorer are you running ?

Above the address bar, next to Tools, click Help. Click "About Internet Explorer" and copy down the version number and any updated versions that are listed.

Eg, Internet Explorer 5.5, SP ?(whatever), then the full version number (string of digits).

Two things.

Goto Start >> Search >> For Files and Folders >> type, MSHTML.DLL

Should be one in C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM

Right click the file >> choose properties.

How big is it ? Now press the "version" tab

What's the files version number ?

Now try repairing IE6.

Go to Control Panel >> +/- programs >> Highlight, Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 SP1 and Internet Tools >> Click remove >> In the dialogue box choose, "Repair"

Viking

I did precisely as you told me, it still won't work...

Repair didn't make any sense for this one, feel a bit annoyed, any other ideas that might help? Thanks a lot.

Lakshu, you forgot the first bit. :)

Doesn't matter.

Create a new folder on your desktop. Call it IEMIL_2.cab

Now goto Search >> For Files and Folders and type.

*.cab

Now scroll down till you see IEMIL_2.cab.

Extract the contents to the folder you just created. That would be the IEMIL_2.cab folder on your desktop.

Now look inside the desktop folder and find MSHTML.DLL. Is it there ? ...Good.

Now goto Search >> For Files and Folders again and type, MSHTML.DLL.

You should now see two MSHTML.DLL's listed

Yes ?

One in, C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM

and one in, C:\WINDOWS\Desktop\IEMIL_2.cab

Yes ?

Now right click on the MSHTML.DLL in C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM and choose properties.

On the properties page that comes up, write down the size of the file.

And, the size of the file on disk.

Now click the "Version" tab and write down the file version number exactly.

Now do EXACTLY the same for the other MSHTML.DLL.

That's the one in C:\WINDOWS\Desktop\IEMIL_2.cab

Now post your findings below. :)

If they are identical, DO NOT go to the windows update site and download any of the new security or other IE related patches.

You can do all that later.

Lakshu,

In case you were confused as to how you "extract". Read on.

When you come to "extract" the contents of IEMIL_2.cab to the folder you created on the desktop, IEMIL_2.cab folder.

To do this, right click on the cab file (IEMIL_2.cab) and choose the "Extract All" option.

I think it says "Extract All" or "Extract" or "Extract To" or something along those lines. I can't remember as I have PowerArchiver loaded and no longer see Windows ME default setting.

Anyway, extract the content into the IEMIL_2.cab folder on the desktop.

Ok Lakshu,

If your struggling to get the file information details I wanted then you are going to have to take your chances by doing either of the following.

Try this first.

Goto Start >> RUN >> type, msconfig

Click the "Extract File" button. In the following box, type, MSHTML.DLL >> Start.

In "Restore From", type, IEMIL_2.cab

In "Save File In", type, C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM

It will then ask you if you want to back up the original MSHTML.DLL file >> Click Ok, then, Ok again to exit msconfig.

Now it asks you to restart. Do so.

The backup MSHTML.DLL file you just saved will be in C:\WINDOWS\MSConfig\Backups

You may need it.

Does this solve the problem ??

If that doesn't work then the way I see it is to reinstall Internet Explorer 6.

Post back and let us know what stage your up to and where your at.

Sorry I hvn't replied you earlier.

The thing is I actually encountered other problems as well at that time, so basically what I did was formatting the whole hard drive and reinstalled everything.

That solved all the problems that I had.

See, it might sounds extreme but did work...

Anyways, thanks ever so much for your expertise opinion, I appreciate it tons.

Best wishes
