acrobat reader 5.0 won't open in I.E.

My OS is WinME and I use I.E. ver6. I use AOL to go online but jump out to I.E. when I browse the web. When I am browsing in I.E. and I attempt to download a pdf file my PC will not open acrobat reader 5.0. that is on my PC. Instead I get a bunch of characters and symbols. I have to copy the link and paste it in AOL which then opens up the pdf file in acrobat reader without any problem. Why isn't I.E. opening up acrobat reader like it always use to in the past? Please advice, thanks!
Thank you for the suggestion. I reloaded Acrobat Reader and nothing changed for the better. Does anyone else have another suggestion on how I can fix this problem? Thanks!
