Ah ha! I didn't know this was a problem but it could be. Whenever I start my computer, I get a message before wondwos loads that says something like this:
your computer is updating your configuration settings. please wait a few moments.
Sorry...I forgot to write it down. But why would it keep updating if I am not changing anything? Seems like there is something going on which could very well be the cause of many of my problems! Any clues?
BTW, hvae been running ME for quite a few years with no problems and I still love it. I refuse to believe that I must go to XP to solve these issues. When I bought this pc, Xp was just about to debut so I got a coupon with the computer to buy XP for $75 which I did. Never installed it and don't want to if I don't have to.

Please wait while setup updates your configuration files.
That's the exact wording! I notice when I restared (I enabled a sound for each time a program opens or closes) that I had an awful lot of robotic dings! Wondering what that was all about. I haven't has sounds enables for anything in years (since 3.11, I think).

Everytime I have a update to my Anti Virus program (AVG) I get that. No problem it just means that there has been a change to ny protection. That is good!! Could that be the case??

It shouldn't happen every time though - it's usually because a system file has been updated/altered, but not necessarily a Microsoft one, it could be any program. Hence you get the message about Windows having to reboot to complete an installation. Have you recently had problems installing any item of software which might be stuck in a loop trying to alter its initial system settings?
"I know that I'm mad - I've always been mad..."

Not that I know of. I am going to be gone this morning but when I get back, will do the clean boot thing. Hopefully, that will provide some clues.
Now that I think about it, that msg shouldn't happen unless I am changing or installing something. It happens everytime so something is smelling like stinky cheese here ;)

After doing a clean boot, I reloaded each line one by one. Syy.ini was fine, win.ini was fine, load static Vxd’s was fine. However, when I got to load startup group items, I got error messages!
“There is a problem with a system file. Windows might not be bale to run correctly. You might be bale to fix the problem by running system restore. If this does not fix the problem, try reinstalling Windows.
VxD dynamic link call : WG3N (01) + 0001924E to “0028” service 8029
To continue running Windows, choose yes. Be aware that your computer might become unstable. To quit Windows, choose No. You will lose any unsaved information. Do you want to continue running Windows?”
I chose yes and got numerous error boxes.
“problem with short cut- Aol6.0 TrayIcon.lnk, then the same error message for Aol.8.0 TrayIcon.lnk, as well as Aol 9.0 TrayIcon.lnk.
(my son uses aol IM and we once had aoHell on this computer J)
Also this error message:
“Error loading c:\PROGRA~I (COULD HAVE BEEN A 1)WILDTA~1\APPS\CDA\CDAENG`1.DLL
System cannot find specified path”and finally,
“Error in NvQTwk missing entry: NvCp1Daemon”I went back to selective starup and clicked for a normal load. I did NOT get the usual “Please wait while setup updates your configuration files. Etc.” this time however, I did get the same dialogue boxes about the errors.
What now?

Before you re-install, try booting off of a start up disk and......
scanreg /fix
or
scanreg /restore
Unless you have tried this already???

just tried to fix the reg. didn't help although it said it fixed errors. no choice but to reinstall.

>> “Error loading c:\PROGRA~I (COULD HAVE BEEN A 1)WILDTA~1\APPS\CDA\CDAENG`1.DLL
System cannot find specified path”<<... Wild Tangent is the culpret. You pick it up running online games. I am not sure ,,, maybe some POGO games require it and I believe AOL adds it. I know online games that run on Bellsouth.net require it. Bad news when it screws up. And does frequently. I believe it does have an uninstall in ADD/remove. But that does not clean it all out. Did you run PestPatrol? Maybe someone here can recommend a program for removing it.

if you are not using AOL any longer maybe removing 6.0,8.0 and 9.0 may help. also go into msconfig and uncheck anything AOL

am freaking out right now! using a win 98, 4 GB pc that i had in the closet!
the setup failed and my os must be corrupted. got down to the part that ask for user id (in normal mode) and it said that the end user license agreement failed. then it shuts down pc. nothing worked! did it again and again! am trying to manually take what info i can from the bad pc to this stupid one!
is God punishing me? did i learn my lesson to never shut down without backing up via flopy, cd, or a pen and paper? yes :)
this is probably going to tkae days to fix and sort through! before i format, i will try using the XP disk to upgrade. i am so scared that that might fail so that is why i am doing all this back up now. i can only boot into safe mode so no cd use and floppies only work for some things. word won't open on a lot of my files either!
i am so messed up right now! i hate compaq tech support!

Do NOT upgrade to XP. Do a fresh install on a formatted drive. I just ran across this link in the XP forum...I suggest you check it out:
http://www.winsupersite.com/showcase/windowsxp_sg_9xupgrade.asp

what is the problem? more a cautionary thing and it says you can always go back. i'm almost ready to format. just making sure i have everything i needed saved on this computer. that's been a job in itself!

Ah! The sweet smell of success...or is that bourbon?
All is well now! It took me about 8 hours today to save info from the bad pc to floppies (lots of irreplacable pix), export and then import favs, addy bks, etc. Was just about to give up and call the d'ld kazaa crap history when I figured i'll just go ahead and try using the XP disk.
It not only worked but I could have saved myself 8 hours of copying all those files!
But on the plus side, I also got one of my older pc's in fine shape now and found a boatload of music d'ld from ag sattelite:)Lesson also learned...Norton Ghost is being installed and used to make backups! Not ad for a snowy Saturday!

You could have recovered your Windows ME. Going in and deleting the C:\Windows\WININIT.INI file if it existed would have taken care of the first problem when you reboot.
The last problem with SETUP not running is well documented on the Microsoft Web site. It is caused by the existence of two different versions of the License file in different folders. Their instructions is to just copy the version in one of the folder over the other copies. I had the problem recently on someone's system and it work quite well.

So where were you yesterday morning? LOL
There wre so many issues the last few months with ME running! It was a rare thing to be able to shut down the computer by just hitting close! Always had to use the restart button and then hit it again before windows loaded. And the blue screens! My homepage is CNN and I thought it was their links that was doing it! OE locked up for good and refused to delete emails. Adaware wouldn't run in anything but safemode. The list just went on and on! Then when the reinstall happened...well at that point I just wanted to save what I needed (I never backed up).
I did learn my lesson about backing up but it's funny that the only thing I can't seem to find right now (on XP) is my front page ebay templates and Outlook. OE is there but Outlook seems to have moved to Florida or somewhere :)
I'm not even sure I will keep XP on this pc. Maybe I will get attached to it as I was to ME all these years.
I am a bit concerned about when I did the install over. Looks like Xp only went to the C drive. This Compaq also uses a "D" drive for system saver and that didn't get the XP install. Any clues?
