8x CD Burning Problems

Recently I had computer troubles and reinstalled windows... it therefore re-assigned my cd rom drives different letters than the original manufacturer config. before i reinstalled.. i had no problem burning cds at 8x speeds. now after i have reinstalled and trid burning at 8x i always get a buffer underrun error.
never happened before and i had many more programs on before i reinstalled.
my comp is set up with the hard drive as a the primary master, dvd as primary slave. cd-rw as secondary master, and zip drive as secondary slave. don't know if this was different before i reinstalled windows ME.
any ideas on why this might be happing would be helpful!

check your hardware settings to ensure that dma has been enabled on your cdrw and your hardrive.if your system is of recent vintage post 1998 you should have this setting enabled to speed up data transfers. right click my computer.choose device manager disk drives and cdrom/or cdrw.open choose properties check dma ignore warning reboot.you will have to do this sequence for each drive.if you are not sure if your system supports dma(direct memory access)contact your manufacturer before making the changes,this should speed things up quite a bit.good luck.
