Comment:

I have a Pentium III computer at 1000MHz with 128MB RAM, witha 56K modem. Even thought I can connect above 50KBPS, an online sped test reported the following:

You 23.8 kbps

28.8 Modem 28.8 kbps Click here to upgrade!

33.6 Modem 33.6 kbps Click here to upgrade!

56k Modem 53.3 kbps Click here to upgrade!

Access to web pages is quite slow, and when I click back in Internet Explorer, the page does not appear instantly like it shoudl, but the connection lights in the system tray flash while the page reloads. I have no idea why this is happening.
Any ideas?

the speed of the modem is only a factor that
comes into between you and your server. from then on the speed is determined by your server and the amount of traffic it can handle plus a lot of other factors.

you have to tweak it from registry, do following changes;;;
-----Begin cut & paste here-----
REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\VxD\MSTCP]
"Tcp1323Opts"="1"
"SackOpts"="1"
"BSDUrgent"="1"

------End cut & paste here------
run Regedit and go to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Class\Modem\0000
-----Begin cut & paste here-----
REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Class\Modem\0000]
"Properties"=hex:80,01,00,00,ff,00,00,00,ff,00,00,00,07,00,00,00,0f,00,00,00,\
77,07,00,00,00,10,0e,00,00,fa,00,00

------End cut & paste here------
after above changes, go to modem properties in DUN and change the speed to 929---, (something like this figure)apply and ok.
go to device manager, select com2 or whatever your modem port is, select and go to properties, in settings tab choose the same speed as DUN. ok and restart.

backup your registry first , if it doesnot work revert to original configuration.

Registry changed may be a bit "over the top" at this point for you.Without knowing what your doing you could really hose things up BAD.Perhaps try a few different sites to guage your speed,mabey another phone line/jack in the house or another cord first.Even try a different modem or update the drivers for the one you have first saving registry hacks as a last resort.
