Hi, everyone. using 733Mhz, 256 ram and 30G
PC. i have two Swap files in Windows.

They are:
1. One which changes in size from maybe 20MB
to 100MB. This I think is the normal one.
Is it?

2. This other one doesn't change - stays at
259MB to the byte. Does not change at all

I have in System.ini.(384Enh) a line ConservativeSwapfileUsage=1. Why doesn't this large 259MB dissappear. And it doesn't change, just stays there. How can I get rid of it?

Do not use Norton at all BTW. Use System Restore, ZoneAlarm and AV6 AV. Use Ram Idle too. Where did it come from. Please give me some tips and help please. 259MB is a very large size -just sitting there in my C:\Windows. Thanks folks.

As an added thought, can I just delete it?

Only one will be in use. Delete the other one.

You were playing around with changing swap files at one time and left one out there. They both should be named WIN386.SWP. One should be in the C:\ and the other in C:\Windows\ (you did not say, it would have helped).

I agree, try deleting the fixed one, if it is not being used, Windows ME will let you delete it. If not, try the other.

The ConservativeSwapfileUsage=1 is good to have if you have 256MB of memory or more as it reduces swap file usage.

You can always boot from your Windows Recovery diskette and use DOS to delete both of the Swap files and Windows ME will build a new one when you boot the system.

Thank you gurus WhitPhil and JackG.

JG: You're right but I had the distinct impression both were C:\Windows - namely the same. Obviously I must be wrong.

Honestly, I don't have the knowledge to play around with swap files JackG and I really would like to know how it was born and nurtured to 259,xxx,xxx bytes - and it hasn't grown an inch since. Maybe its hibernating. :-) Thank fellows.

JacKG - youre right. Just checked. Indeed the big one Swap file 259MB is at C:\ and not
C:\Windows. Just deleted it and leaving it in recycle for time being.

Im starting another thread to remove another
big MB file. See upwards In Main for details.
BTW thank you both again.
