My pc came preinstalled with Windows ME. Wow, it is so unstable - it crashes almost daily, which is not terribly important when playing games, but for my work it's terrible.
I'd like to install Windows 2000, for it's stability, and it's ability to connect to the network at my office. On the other hand, I'd like to keep Windows ME mostly for games, because my understanding is that Windows 2000 is not compatible with a lot of games. I'd really appreciate it if someone could tell me if it's possible to install both operating systems on the hard drive, and how to access each for its respective functions.
Thanks.
JimP

It is possible to run two operating systems on the same drive. To do this it means spending money on software. You will need a copy of Partition Magic (7 is the latest version. This allows you to split your drive so that you can run upto four operating systems at once. As for accessing each seperate partition Partition magic comes bundled with a Boot manager appliction which allows you to choose which partition you wish to boot up. The other partitions are hiiden. Partition magic 7 will set you back around £50 but it is a useful piece of kit.

you do not need partition magic to do this, it is a simple dual boot and cloning, just get ghost by symantec and use it. it takes about ten minutes and work perfect. Ghost is very cheap and reliable.

There are several ways to dual boot depending upon your situation. Since you are having multiple problems with your install of Windows ME, I would suggest:
Wiping the drive.
Setting up two or three partitions.
Installing ME.
Installing Windows 2000.Boot.ini and Ntldr will give you a choice of which OS you want to boot into every times you reboot. Third party software is not necessary when the secondary operating system is NT/2000/XP.
Back up your data and have at it. You'll be much happier.
There is just TONS of information on the net on how to dual boot. Start at this article from Microsoft (this is the only "supported" confiruation from them) and then ask any questions you have:

if i was u id format the current hdd, partition it into 2 drives, i dont know why these ppl are saying get partition magic, etc its not needed.
then install me then id recommend XP, good for games, extremely stable everythings good about it. Or instead u can just have XP on its own.!
