Comment: My computer crashed I have the S3 Trio 3D/2X graphics but since we reformatted I can only get 16 colors. I fixed this problem with 98 but I honestly don't remember how. Can anyone help please!

Reply: (edit)Check that you have the correct monitor installed (Display > Settings > Advanced) If you don't have the drivers for your monitor default back to Plug and Play setting.

Reply: (edit)I'm sorry I should have given more details. I went to the S3 site and installed the new drivers and the display and have the correct monitor installed but still am not able to get more than 16 colors! I even tried hooking my old monitor up and installing it and it still didn't work.

Reply: (edit)run MSCONFIG and select the advanced button when the general tab opens up. See if VGA 640X480X16 is checked and if it is clear it click OK and go from there.

Reply: (edit)If you go to display properties>>settings>>advanced button, what does Windows think your graphics card is? If you go to device manager>>click the plus sign by display adapters what is listed there? Do you have both the S3 card and Standard VGA listed? If you do, remove them both, reboot, and install just the S3 card drivers.

Reply: (edit)Agree with newgrl......sometimes it is easier to remove the one you don't want and use the update procedure for the one you do want to make sure you have the most up to date drivers:
right click on My Computer, go to properties, device manager, expand the + beside display adapters (which means graphics cards), click on the driver listed, go to properties (bottom left), find the driver tab, click update driver, select specify the location of the driver, click on display a list of drivers in a specific location, click next, click have disk, and point Windows to the new drivers for your card and let it update. Reboot and see how it is. If you are still in trouble, download the latest driver from your card manufacturer and repeat the update. Also download the latest VIA 4 in 1 chipset drivers from here
http://www.viatech.com/jsp/en/dr/driver.jsp or, if you have an Intel chipset, download an updated ATA storage driver from http://support.intel.com/support/chipsets/driver.htm To find out which you have, go back to device manager and expand the + beside "system devices", scroll down and if there is a whole load of VIA stuff at the bottom then that's what you have.

Reply: (edit)I have tried everything you have suggested and still only have 16 colors this is driving me batty. It worked fine before but I also had 98 and had upgraded to ME instead of reformatting and using ME to start. Maybe I need to put 98 back into the computer.

Reply: (edit)I contacted microsoft online and am waiting for an answer. They had me give them some info. When I find out the fix (if there is one!) I will post it to help anyone else that is having this problem. I went to S3's site and they don't have contact info to ask them so hopefully Microsoft can help without me having to pay for it!

Reply: (edit)Well, Microsoft sent me to S3 site to download a driver but I have tried them all already. And they told me to contact S3 but I cannot find any contact information for S3. UGH I guess I need to restart my computer with 98 and go from there! I just have to get the disk from a friend to do it.

Reply: (edit)Ok I don't know how I managed it but I did. I have a selection but now in the MSCONFIG the VGA 640X480X16 is selected but I am unable to deselect it. Anyone know how to fix this one? TIA
