Comment:

When I try to install another bank of 512 to bring my total memory up to 1 gig my computer will not completley boot up. It gets to the point where the desktop will load but the computer shuts down completely. my motherboard supports 1.53 gig I know Me has issues with lots of memory, but I have some applications that require ram.
Any help would be great!!!

IMO if you need that much ram, install a different operating system.

Hi Vic, you can try booting into safe mode. Then go to start - run, type msconfig. Within the 'general tab' at the lower right click on the 'advanced' button. There you can check the button to 'limit memory' to however much memory you have...try the highest amount first...then work your way down til you find the amount that works best for you.
-good luck

ps: this feature will add a 'MaxPhysPage' line in your system.ini file automatically so the system will know how much memory to work with

It is a file cache issue when you get above 512.
Do Start > Run > System.ini
Scroll to the [vcache] section and add the line
MaxFileCache=512000

Save, exit and reboot

shows vchache size and physical memory size

Dave, you are right. 512 is the maximum windows 9x/Me can use. Here's a solution from microsoft: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q253912
So Vic if you want to keep the extra 512 ram installed...be sure to set your limits in the system.ini file or use the system configuration utility to limit memory to 512.
-good luck

Just for clarification

512 is NOT the maximum that Windows can use.

The issue is that above 512, without any constraints, vcache takes all the virtual addresses resulting in out of memory errors or other problems.

The solution is to place an upper limit on the file cache using MaxFileCache.

Once done, Window will use ALL of the installed ram (if needed), BUT the file cache will get no larger than 512MBs.

Sorry...I meant to say 512 is the maximum file cache size (MaxFileCache) recommended for windows 9x/Me. Hope I didn't confuse anyone out there.
