** RESOURCE: Scandisk & Defrag

The newest threads are listed first. Newer posts may have more current information and/or build on experience or on info from prior posts, but not always. One of the advantages of looking at prior posts instead of posting a new thread is that you’ll immediately see multiple solutions and/or conflicting advice or maybe even a lively discussion. While the best answer to some questions may always be the same, not all advice works for every system. Therefore, be cautious, especially of advice touting one-size fits-all cures for anything and everything that ails your computer. Some posters hawk software they just discovered without fully knowing it does, or even if it can harm your system. Some of these RESOURCE posts may include URLs for MS Knowledge Base articles and/or other websites; if so, they’re listed after Computing.net threads. Six digit numbers are from the Win9x forum; 5 & 4 digit numbers are from the WinME forum. For the reasons behind these posts, see RESOURCE: Introduction. Please add other resources to this post, and I’ll incorporate them in updated listings. Exceptional links (very comprehensive or having info/advice not found elsewhere) will be indicated with »double guillemets«. This updates and therefore replaces post # 20291.

I had the same problem with Automatic Update clicking back in (turned on) when using Delindex.

The solution I used, was to follow RM's path in Delindex concerning WUHISTV3.log, and apply it to
AUSTATE.cfg which is in the same History folder.

In order to get it to work in my computer I had take the long way around and change the 'Hidden' attribute to unhide AUSTATE.cfg, then move it into C:\ along with wuhistv3.log.

After Delindex did it's thing, I moved AUSTATE.cfg back into the rebuilt History folder along with WUHISTV3.log, and gave AUSTATE.cfg back it's 'Hidden' attribute again.

:HISTORY
if not exist c:\progra~1\window~2\austate.cfg goto HISTORY1
attrib -h c:\progra~1\window~2\austate.cfg
move /y c:\progra~1\window~2\austate.cfg c:\>nul
:HISTORY1
if exist c:\progra~1\window~2\wuhistv3.log move /y c:\progra~1\window~2\wuhistv3.log c:\>nul
deltree /y c:\progra~1\window~2\>nul
if not exist c:\austate.cfg goto HISTORY2
move /y c:\austate.cfg c:\progra~1\window~2\>nul
attrib +h c:\progra~1\window~2\austate.cfg
:HISTORY2
if exist c:\wuhistv3.log move /y c:\wuhistv3.log c:\progra~1\window~2\>nul

I think that the AUSTATE.cfg file has something to do with Automatic Update State (on/off) and may also contain information as to your signing the EULA (End User License Agrrement) with certain updates and Microsoft software.
