Comment:
I just found a neat utility that is similar to System Mechanic, except that it is FREE instead of $60. It can clean the Registry (quite well; it found obsolete stuff that System Mechanic, Win Doctor, and RegClean didn’t find, and so far no adverse effects; it also has an undo feature). It can also find “Unnecessary files” (so far so good) and can find “duplicate files” which I have not tried (a long time ago I deleted “duplicate files” that were needed.) I think it’s worth a try.

I used EasyCleaner 1.7 about nine months ago before using RegCleaner. Both are Finnish
software. EasyCleaner kepted finding "unnecessary" files required by my "Help and Restore". And I had to go to it's Backup to repeatedly retrieve themAs for the other functions, I certainly can't fault them. And it has that handy device for showing you the size of folders and files.

ok..i`m beggining to like getting my hands dirty so.....

Let see. It's been sometime since I've used EasyCleaner. As I recall you can only restore 10 items maximum. If this is correct, then don't delete any. However if you can restore them -all 213 entries- fine delete them. After all you restore them all if something goes wrong. Better read the manual regarding Backup first re this point.
If you have RegCleaner, run it and see what it says as far invalid registry entries are concerned. This is what I use.

These cleaners are not for the amature!!!
Before you start, BACKUP your registry. Yhere is a fairly high chance that you'll need to do a restore.
Deleting invalid short cuts, no big deal, you have reminants of Kaaza or some other program that IS CLEARLEY DEFINED, no problem.
Deleting duplicate programs or dll's can be a problem. You probably have duplicate Dll's. But their in different folders. The programs that use them aren't going to look to another folder to find them. MY 2 cents

I deleted 59 entries and so far NO problems. But I agree that this probably isn't for newbies.

There was a good discussion regarding Registry Cleaners initialled by a m nava at message 20552 - in late Feb., attracting more than 30 posts which was very informative. Remember that one RM?
Whilst I agree that one should be careful in using these cleaners, one cannot stay away from them indefinitely for they are part of computer life and should be faced sooner or later which really is the point. And they are not that complicated either. What's required is experience and the only way to get that is to start IMO.
I personally prefer throwing people considered capable, into the deep end myself but that's just my method. Different folks, different strokes.

Installed it and seems safe enough. But do warn people to stay away from the duplicate programs option. The only trouble I had with it, was it listed a large PCHealth file as a file I could delete. But it was an active file and Windows ME would not delete it.
I did find about 98 Registry entries other Registry cleaner missed.

Following directions from some Me site. I direct the program to skip "help,control,_restore", sans quotes. I have not had problems of any kind after using the program many times.

I use RegCleaner with Evidence Eliminator (It runs it for me when I run EE) and I have never had a problem! fingers crossed!

Ooops... The Registry clean function of Easy Cleaner cleared out required entries for HELP.
May be related to responses #3 and #12 above. Details on what files might help.
After rebooting this morning, I discovered HELP and System Information (MSINFO32) no longer worked. Both came up with the error screen you get when you can not locate a URL, and then would not let you do anything but type in the Search field.
I was able to restore the Registry entries and recover normal HELP and MSINFO32 function. Actually, I find this very helpful. I have been trying to help someone in Jaring,MY fix her system. Had it all running except for HELP and System Information. The person who setup her machine had installed and ran Easy Cleaner. Now I can track down what Registry entries are deleted on her machine. But she got hit by the W32.Klez virus two days ago and even though NAV claims to have handled it, her system is a mess.
Easy Cleaner is not safe on Windows ME right now.

As mentioned in my response #3 Easy Cleaner
when removing "unnecessary files" (as I recall and it's been sometime) removed four files all named the same which rendered
my "Help and Restore" useless. Experience therefore taught me not to eliminate those four after restoring them from EasyCleaner's Backup or is it called "undo". Forgotten the name of the file. This elimination apparently is not common to all EasyCleaner users. The why is interesting.
Anyway I use RegCleaner now and it has 100percent backup and I don't recall ever having to restore any backup so far.

I deleted the 59 entries. No problem, until I clicked on Help. No help. Not that Help is much help either. I took the original undo file, made a copy of it, and took out everything except 4 help references. Then I clicked on it. Help now works like it used to. So does ms32info.
EasyCleaner saves up to 10 separate undo files (default; can be changed), but there is no limit that I know of as to how many registry entries in each undo file.
I do not run System Restore, but I did not see any _RESTORE entries in the undo file.
Thanks to all of you, especially the heads-up on the help files.
I also added help, control, and _restore to be skipped. So far so good.

Having had several requests for help restoring HELP and System Information due to Easy Cleaner, here is the FIXHELP.REG file entries that can restore HELP.
Cut and paste the following lines into NotePad and save as FIXHELP.REG - then use Explorer to find the file and click on it. It will update the Registry and fix the HELP.
File - FIXHELP.REG
-------copy------
REGEDIT4
; This contains the HELP entries deleted. Double click on this file
; in Windows Explorer to add these entries back to registry.
