Whats wrong with winzip?
Its free and the ONLY nag is the welcome screen on which you have to click on "agree" every time you open a zip file or invoke winzip.
Do a search on google with the words "winzip download" and download it, install it.

You can get rid of the welcome screen by registering with microsoft for a fee.
Also WinXP can "open" zipped files, as in view zip archives.

Good Luck and Happy Computing,

use the previous version (latest version is a 21 days trial) of Winzip, an excellent program to unzip (and to zip) files

here is the link to it (browse towards the bottom and look for winzip 8)

winzip 8.1

I have never been a fan of Winzip's nag even though there is a workaround.

But a few years ago I tried and used FreeZip. It is as simple as simple can get. It's free too.

I personally have been using PowerArchiver V6.11 (Versions prior to 7.0 are freeware.)
Using the custom install I got it just like I wanted it and now find it very simple to use. It is very similar to WinZip without the nag.

I do believe "FreeZip" is the one you are looking for.

Plenty to choose from

Older versions of WinZip etc. can also be obtained (not too surprisingly) at OldVersion.com

{which I now see that Bryan has also linked to - - ah well, I already typed this ; ) }

I'm just looking for clues at the scene of the crime

Don't care for WinZip myself. My favorite is ExpressZip, and although it's no longer freeware you can possibly find one of the old versions for download somewhere. 2.0 was the last freeware version, and I've seen version 1.2 for download also.

IZArc is a good program too, and is freeware. The interface isn't as easy as ExpressZip, but you can extract files from dozens of different compression formats.

Go to NoNags, or any other trustworthy download site, and you'll find tons of other freeware zip programs to choose from.

Best Wishes,
Bob

If you want really basic, go for Minunzip. Can't get much more basic and smaller than that (only 33k), yet still works excellent.

Minunzip works great. I could not install winzip because I do not have admin privledges on my win2000 work station, but Minunzip installed and did the job just fine. I'm new to win2000, is there a way to know what programs I can install and what programs I can't without admin privledges? Thanks, this thread was extremely helpful!
