Someone has to know something about this. I just got a new (used) laptop, and i'm trying to install win98se on it. I this error:
himem.sys detected unreliable XMS memory at address 00c07416. XMS driver not installed.
I also got the error:
himem.sys is missing.
I searched for the himem.sys and it is there.
Sometimes it also says "invalid system disk, please insert new disk and press any key".
I have a new hard drive. I reformated and fdisked, and partitioned fat32. What in the heck is going on?? Someone told me that i the ram might be corrupt?? It has 32meg right now and i have an extra 16meg chip. It has 2 slots to insert to more chips of ram. Will adding this ram help?
It has a 4.32 gig hard drive, 233 p processor.
I also was told that the cdrom might be running to fast causing it to vibrate and skip??
Please..............HELP ME, I miss my laptop!!!!! If you can fix this, please give me the info in a language that i can uderstand. You can email me!!!!!!
Thanks

I have more questions, no answers. I also get this XMS not installed... version 3.95, address: 04001DEO and then himen.sys file missing (but it isn't.) I am frustrated, I have this incredible computer that was built for me... and it crashes all the time. 256 MB RAM and I'm told I don't have enough memory to run photoshop. I'm trying to log on in safe mode to get rid of a trojan (*PTSNOOP) which I am thinking could be using the memory. The guy who built this computer is not available to help. Anyone know what I should do?

Windows is telling you that one or more of your ram chips is bad. It won't load the extended memory manager if the ram fails testing. Try removing/replacing them to find the offender.
As for himem.sys ... Do a search on this site for himem.sys, opinions vary.

Tried going to sysconfig(start>run>msconfig) and choosing selective startup unchecking autoexec.bat/config.sys/win.ini/sys.ini?Seeing if you still get errors?

PTSNOOP wasn't that a false reading(as a trogan)by Norton of some modem software?

In order not to pile up confusion after confusion, I would suggest Ikelemme post a new message.

Need some clarifications, Travis.
[1] You said you tried to install win98se. Have you successfully installed yet? Or what you have described comes from the existing OS residing on your new used laptop? If it is not win98se, what is the OS?
[2] What is the version of the himem.sys? If you do not know, what is the size of it?
[3] You said himem.sys is missing. To what mode your laptop boots into? Is it prompt to Dos, c:\> say? Or it hang and you find out himem.sys is there only after you boot with you boot disk on floppy drive?
[4] What is the brand and model of your laptop?

That was alot of questions for a fairly new computer user!!! :0
Ok i'll try to explain the best i can...
I had a clean hard drive, i tried to install win98se, it got all the way to "windows must restart your computer", so i did. When it booted it gave me the message about not having the XMS driver. I went to prompt only and searched my config.sys and it shows my himem.sys is there. So i chose to edit, so i could see what was in that file. Only one line was in it??
So, i put in my floppy boot disk and looked at the himem.sys file and there's about 16 lines?? I have absolutely no idea what i'm doing!! Right now For some reason it won't boot from my floppy. The only way i can read from it is to go to command prompt only, then i can read it.
Right now if i start my computer it automatically goes to the f8 menu, telling me that windoes did not finish loading on the previous attempt. I try to boot through safe mode and it gives me the same message "ERROR: HIMEM:SYS has detected unreliable XMS memory at address 00c91416, XMS driver not installed". I have partitioned the hard drive and formated it.
That is as descriptive as i can get!!
Gateway solo 2500, 32 meg, 4.32 gig, cd and floppy both internal. I had someone tell me that i might have bad ram?? It has 2 empty slots in the bottom for 2 ram chips, they are empty. I have an extra 16meg ram chip if i need it!! Sheeeeeeeewwwwww, my fingers hurt now!!!
Can you help?? Feel free to email me!! I have aol im and msn im if needed.

Thanks for the feedback. It is really hard to visualize from what you describe there. I know you try the best. I also need time to digest what you said. I am not finished digesting yet!

I got to
"I went to prompt only and searched my config.sys and it shows my himem.sys is there. So i chose to edit, so i could see what was in that file. Only one line was in it??"
It does not make much sense to me. Do you mean you edit config.sys just to see what's in there and find out that there is only one line and the line involves himem.sys---that is why it is there? Or you actually edit himem.sys? I smell trouble.

I'm very much worried from what you did. If you do not know what you are doing, do not edit any file yet. I have not double himem.sys must be sitting in your interrupt installation at the \windows directory. You can alway use

dir c:\windows\*.sys

to discover if it is there. No need to edit anything.

Concrete suggestion----------------
Do you know how to get to the bios setting? Press DEL when the system is powered up.
Go to ADVANCED CMOS SETUP. Look for EXTERNAL CACHE. Set it to DISABLED.
Clear up the harddisk again. Format it with /s switch. Then do the installation.
------------------------------------

This is only one out of many possible ways to further diagonistic. But, if I say more, am afraid to confuse you more.

I only went to edit to see what was in the file!! It is easier to read with the blue background. There was only one line of code in that file on my hard drive.
I put my floppy in and "viewed" edit also, and there was about 16 lines of code on the floppy disk.
That doesn't seem right, i figure you should have the same or at least close to the same amount of code on your hard drive and the floppy for config.sys?
It never auto-boots from the floppy, i always have to use the CD, or go through dos to use the floppy manually.
Thanks for the info, i'll try what you said about the BIOS.

I'm not confused by what you say, i understand all of it, but there is some things that i don't know how to do yet, because i've never had too!!

Thanks

Ok, what you're saying is that you opened the file CONFIG.SYS on drive c: with DOS edit to examine it for a reference to himem.sys, then did the same with the floppy. (FYI it's not really code, it's just script - don't mess with code). Although the 2 config.sys files should probably be similar, they aren't necessarily the same. Config.sys is just a series of "english" instructions to load DOS drivers immediately after the boot. It's not generally required for Windows 9x - just for DOS programs. Right now, it sounds like you have a bad boot sector on your hard drive and a possible ram problem *imo*

Just for information sake, himem.sys varies quite a bit in the windows series.

win95 osr2 himem.sys 22,925 bytes
win98 fe himem.sys 36,864 bytes etc

In any case, for win95, himem.sys does not test memory automatically by default. It only test memeory by default when you boot to safe mode. Win98 would be the same. That is why it is worrying if the error message shows up for a fresh installation.

At the risk of future instability of the system, you can enforce it by editing or adding the line in config.sys

device=c:\windows\himem.sys /testmem:off

The error msg points its finger mainly to faulty memory. But, it may not necessary be so.

But, in any case, you do not have to contemplate adding memory to the system. It only complicates the matter.

ok, i checked the bios, and noticed that it always boots from cdrom. i should've known that, but wasn't paying much attention.
I changed to boot from a,cdrom,c.
Then i replace ram with new 64meg chip.
Then i updated all the drivers.
Deleted all partitions and added new one.
Reformated using c:/s.
Inserted floppy to start installing win98se like normal, and guess what????

IT WORKED!!!!!!!!!!!
RUNS LIKE A FREAKIN CHAMP NOW!!!
Thanks for all the help guys!!!!!
I'm out............
