Comment:

I reformatted my C:\ and would like to install win98. I started the machine using a win95 startup disk. I received the error: Unable to control A20 line! XMS Driver not installed. Could someone help to resolve this? Without loading the XMS driver, I wouldn't be able to install Win98.

Thanks,
Fee

You type device=c:\windows\himem.sys /testmem:off /M:1.
That will help you.

On my Sony laptop, I input the above command as well as and still couldn't get anywhere. Where do you type it in the DOS and where? Is the device in the CPU? Recovery disk? Can't find it.

1) If you have loaded Norton Antivirus for Windows 95, it could cause problems on cetain computers. Visit Symantec site for more info
2) I'd try first the /testmem:off at the end of device=c:\windows\himem.sys line in config.sys
3) I'd add the /cpuclock:on at the end of the same line
4) I'd add the /m:1 at the end of the same line.
5) upgrade your BIOS
6) if this doesn't work, well, buy a new computer

If you have formated the c:drive, there will not be a config.sys to edit, therefor I have no idea how to fix this problem; If anyone does know, please let me know

If there is no CONFIG.SYS to edit, just create a new one. Get an example file (grab one from another computer) and tweak stuff until it works. It's not a big deal to just make a new one. Use MS-DOS Editor or something (find it on the Windows CD somewhere - it's called EDIT.COM).

I would try changing the "First boot device" to boot from CD-ROM in the CMOS or BIOS.
Boot off the WIN98 CD and load that way.
Once it's done loading reset it to boot from the floppy first.

if you don't have a config.sys
open your msdos prompt ..go to the C:\
then type Edit config.sys
enter the lines from the responses above
device=c:\windows\himem.sys /testmem:off
and continue booting ..if that doesn't work read the responses above from Pierre Gomez and keep editing the same line by adding those switches.
good luck =8)

I have the same problem, also, but my situation is totally different. We bought a PC Chips system already assembled, with WIN 98 SE on it. It has the latest drivers on it, but the Windows ran maybe 15 minutes, crashed, rebooted, registry restarts over and over again. When trying to start from safe-mode, it says Windows XMS driver version 3.95, XMS driver version 3.0, no XMS driver installed. Have no clue how to get any updated driver for it. Tried the PC Chips site, but it's either down, too slow, or no downloads work for getting the drivers. If anyone knows how to fix it one step at a time, I can do it. I've built my own machines before with never a problem, but THIS....ughhhh :(

i tried to start up my computer but it would go from boot screen to the windows start screen then shut down. I was able to run scan disk and it found a bad sector. It also reported XMS driver not installed. How do i go about reinstalling this without loosing everything on my computer now?
