i am trying to get a dinosour of a computer to get running. It is a pentium set at 133 with windows 95. Well i guess it is not that old. The problem is that when I start the computer it says that the xms driver is not installed then it shuts down. How do I find and install the xms driver? It won't even start up in safe mode. The funny thing is that when I reinstalled windows it worked perfect. I then tryed to install netscape navigator 2.01 (old netscape for old computer) It did the obove again. Some other problems it has is that it has trubble starting user.exe and gdi.exe then shuts down. Can someone please help me? or should I just throw this thing out?

Re-install windows again. Delete (yes, DELETE) the config.sys and autoexec.bat if they are created as Windows 9x doesn't need them. However, if you are planning to run any real-mode dos programs then don't do this. Sorry, was that warning too late???
Hope this helps

Your problem may be to complex to find an easy fix, but a little reasearch might make all the difference. Try this URL to MS Articles http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q109/8/45.asp?LN=EN-US&SD=gn&FR=0&qry=xms%20&rnk=1&src=DHCS_MSPSS_gn_SRCH&SPR=W95
and see if it sheds so light on your issues. I have found with more complex issues such as these that a thorough search throught the MS Knowledge base can be useful in tracking down the correct procedure to follow in resolving issues. If I had this in front of me I would begin by deleting all the existing partitions and recreating a new one for large hard drive support (Fat32) and then format the drive. Make sure you have a good boot disk with himem.sys and copy over all the files to the C: after you format and transfer the system files. Good luck

you say "set at 133"? is it possibly over clocked. I've tried overclocking, and this can cause the types of problems you mention
(and all sorts of others).Windows 95 doesn't need an xms driver, but it should automatically load "himem.sys" if you go to safe mode.

i have reinstalled windows and tryed to setup my modem and i had to restart the computer. It never restarted. It came up with the message error loading user.exe this was up for just enought time to read that(there was more but i think it sayd that it had to shut down) then the message "It's now safe to shut off your computer" another time I restarted and then It was doing allright when
memory size decreased
press for setup to bootso I press esc and it goes threw the Ezbios flawlesly starting windows 95 it worked so i thought the problem fixed itself (if you have a background about windows you know what i am talking about) and so i restart and nope it decides to be a jerk and not get passed the little user.exe remark
what does user.exe do?
As i am typing this it is reinstalling windows.
