I bought a new/old puter and I need to xfer some files that I use for my business from old puter to new/old one. Old one is an 80486 100 cpu, 32 ram, win 95 4.00.950. My main area of concern is MSMoney and MSworks. Both were added on old 486 but now I cant find disks to simply add to new P111. Short of installing old HD in new P111 and copying it, is there anyother way to xfer files from one puter to another. By the way, 486 uses ISA buss so there is very little that I can buy to upgrade or use to connect these 2 puters together, everything is either PCI or USB none of which is available on the old 486 which rules out external zip drives so far as I can find. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You won't be able to transfer an application from one computer to another. you have to reinstall on the new machine and transfer the data files only from the old machine.
as far as transfer you have a few options.
floppy copies
laplink cable and Filemaven
email them to yourself

Windows has Direct Cable connection in-built you only need a lapLink parallel or null modem serial cable see:

SkipCox, I have Works 4.0 and Money 4.0a on old 486 and MSWord 2000 9.0.2720 And MSExcel 2000 9.0.2720 and Quickbooks Pro 2000 on the new P3 Puter, thats why I need to xfer these other applications to use atleast till the year is over and then start over again with new stuff. Old puter just way too slow and is almost full with much needed applications that cant be removed to make more space and just try and get a larger HD for an old 486 !!!!! one last ?, I still have all the registration numbers, oem numbers, and product ID numbers for the MSMoney and MSWorks, Any chance that MS will let me DL them onto new puter? Thanks everyone, its all been very helpful.

You can take the HD out & slave it to the new one .
xxcopy copies long file names .
xxcopy ( freeware ) from ,

http://groups.google.com/groups?q=xxcopy&num=100&hl=en&lr=lang_en&safe=off&scoring=date&as_drrb=quick&as_qdr=&filter=0Start > Programs > MS-DOS Prompt .
Copy a command from the selection below & click paste in MS-DOS , then click Enter .
No need to close any programs down .1st command , you get a copy of everything .
2nd command excludes Windows .
3rd command copies Windows only .
4th command excludes Windows Temporary Internet Files .Adjust drive letters to suit .
1 . XXCOPY C:\ D:\ /CLONE
2 . XXCOPY C:\ D:\ /CLONE /Xwindows\
3 . XXCOPY C:\Windows D:\Windows
4 . XXCOPY C:\ D:\ /Clone /x\windows\temp*\If you don't want to confirm all the overwrites ( you get 3 choices Y,N,A, Y ( yes ) overwrites that file , N ( No ) , A ( All ) overwrites everthing ) use the /yy switch after Clone .
Eg. XXCOPY /CLONE /YY C:\ X:\Below applies if you want to make the new hard drive your main drive ( usually C )
http://members.tripod.com/~diligent/harddisk.htm
Use the startup disk to boot the computer and when you are at the A:\ prompt type sys c: and press Enter. The required boot information will be copied to the new disk and you have a working copy of the old hard
disk .
If the partition is not active , use fdisk , option 2 .If the drive you copied was partitioned , ( ex. C has the Operating system , D has Programs E has other files & so on ) the new drive is best partitioned the same way .
You can always change things around on the new drive later .

" Any chance that MS will let me DL them onto new puter? "
If you have the (installaion) software complete and the required numbers etc., just install afresh to new system? It won't really matter if M$ knows or not... You are going to be running it all on the new system - and as you own the software, as long as you are technically only using it one system, it's yours to do with as you please?
Nice load of helpful info from Johnw although it does mean slaving the drive to the new system?
Otherwise laplink etc. options...?

Trvlr, Yes It would be nice to just reinstall from disk onto new puter but, and there's always a but !!, I have lost the whole box of software disk, floppies, and some file back ups that I have installed on old puter. I cant find them anywhere. I was just wondering out-loud that since I DID buy the software and it IS registered to me then mabe they, MS, would let me replace it with a DL since it is old software. I did email them though but have yet to get an answer from them, mabe they are still laffin. I'll pass on any info I get though.Yes JohnW completely showed me the way to slave the old drive. I have purchased the serial cable and will try and work it out that way first, but if that fails then its slave drive time. Thanks to all who took time to help me out.

Well, it's not FREE, but for $7.99 US you can get MS Works 4.0 & Money (not sure what version) here:

Dave

DAVE !!!!! you are a lifesaver !!! Thank you very much.
Update: Still no answer to email to MS. Thanks to dave that point becomes moot. I did the Direct Cable hook up but RayMan was right, no .exe files will flow. I had turned my hat around backwards and was fixin to attempt a HD slave setup according to Johnw but decided at last minute to check back here and there was dave here to save the day,(and 2 computers most likely) Also kudos to x86 for the very informative link provided. There is a whole lot more to a Direct Cable link than is in the setup wizard. I could not have done it without that link, I highly recommend anyone attempting to direct cable link two computers together to vist this site. Once again thanks to all.
