Comment:

Icons on my machine intermitently change to the wrong icon. For instance Word doc's get the hand under icon. Audio files end up with the icon for Access databases. Basically, instead of the usual icons, random incorrect icons appear. Any ideas?

Keep an eye on your `System Resources' (right click My Computer, Properties, Performance) to see if it's related to your problem. If the System Resources drop to zero it can cause weird problems.

download tweakui and select rebuild all icons, then you should scan for a virus.
