well, what i've searched so far is that this is a common problem. There is a write protect on my hard drive. The problem is that I cannot fdisk my drive because it says there is a write protection error and after my drive has been formatted and partitioned through other means such as maxtors powermax utility, there appears a writing to drive c problem when trying to install windows 98. I know for sure that this does not concern the hard drive because i had it replaced with a brand spanking new one(thank you maxtor) so it must be bios. I see that my bios is AMI version 1.20. cannot find any option that turns this write protection off. Please help me

I've written this before...but i have Win 95. But when i have to format my HD,i have to go to the C:\ in dos and type LOCK and hit Enter answer Y. Windows locks out certain files that you can not delete unless you type this command. Let me know if this works on Win 98...thanks.

Forgot to mention...if you do this you will have to re-format the HD.

that's strange....hd's themselves don't really support a write-protection....it must be bios related, especially if it does it with multiple drives....
i would just reset the bios...whatever it is, it's not a normal setup, so setting everything back to it's defaults should stop it
