OS: win 98
CPU/Ram: 512mb
Product: IBM Thinkpad

OK here goes. XP was running on my IBM laptop for some reason the other day when booting it said No operting system found. The C drive appeared to be corrupted? Nothing would work! I have no XP disk only a Win 98SE. So I have created a partition using fdisk. I now need to format C. However I am trying to extract the format.com from the cab but I get the message WRITE PROTECT ERROR WRITING DRIVE A. Please help the ram drive seems to be protected?

Hi michaell977, hi everyone

To do the old time regulars I would like to say;
Hi there good to see you're still around, and sorry for not being around in a while myself. :-|

To michaell977 I would like to suggest to have a look here at: Partition and Format a Hard Drive if there is no other way to salvage your XP partition and OS. Currently I cannot think of any, sorry. :-(
Hopefully someone else does!

Download a file to create a win98 bootable floppy from www.bootdisk.com. It will have format.com on it.

Drive A: is not a RAM drive. Drive A: is always the floppy drive. The RAM drive will be C: or greater depending if you have a readable partition on the hard drive. It doesn't have to be formatted.

Write Protect Error means that the write protect tab on the floppy disk is in the wrong place and needs to be moved.

"I have no XP disk"

Not a great start for XP

At any rate, no reason to go this route in the first place, just create a diskette from the readymade online images available (and perhaps read some of the recommended information)

Are you trying to copy/extract format.com to the A: disk?

Format should either be on the boot floppy, or, in the RAMDRIVE created from the floppy.

Simply run the command.

As mentioned earlier, if A: is write protected, then it's either the tab on the disk, or it's a bios setting.

Hi Michael here. Thanks for the advice. Problem is my IBM Thinkpad does not have a floppy drive, only a DVD ROM. So I can boot using the Win98SE CD. I need to format C but format.com isn't in the RAM drive which appears to be A: and the drive A: is write protected when I try "extract ebd.cab formnat.com" as suggested on MS website. Any free utilities I could use to burn to a bootable CD rom that would format my C drive and let me install windows?

Hi Michael, max00, Stuart, jboy, Dan, hi everyone

Once you have booted your laptop with the Win98SE CD-ROM at the DOS-prompt type in:
cd\win98 [Enter], now you should be able to format your Hard Disk Drive by typing: format c: /s[Enter] as mentioned in the earlier provided link.

BTW, I am in the assumption that you have already successfully created a, and set active, Primary Partition.

When booting from the cd, the ramdrive is usually set up at a:. I assume that's the reason for the error, although I've never tried what you're doing. Other than that, just use the file from the WIN98 folder as The Count recommended.
