I wanted to do a format on the computer, but the floppy drive is not working.
I was not sure if it would boot from the CD , so I changed the boot sequence and tried.
The setup started then stopped. It said there were antivirus files stopping the setup.

OK I thought, I'll do the format and these files will be deleted.
When the format was completed it said,
WRITE PROTECT ERROR..............format terminated.

So I did a search for these antivirus files and found a few zonealarm files which I deleted, however when I tried to empty the recycle bin it would not let me delete one of the files, it said,
error deleting file, cannot delete ZLCommDB Access denied, make sure the disk is not full or write protected and the file is not currently in use. Could this file be causing the format to stop?????

I closed the recycle bin and searched for more files, when I went back to the recycle bin that file had gone, I searched for it but could not find it any where.

I tried another format but the same thing, write protect error ,format terminated.

I tried to boot again from the CD , to see if the antivirus files had gone, but this time I got,
setup cannot install windows 98, a disk error was detected while writing a new boot record to your first hard disk.

Any ideas on how to sort this

Roger

Look in BIOS to see if it's protecting/preventing boot sector writes.

where abouts in the bios do I find the boot sector writes. I'm not too good with theses things. I can see the boot sequence and a fast boot setting.
thanks

due to all bios's being different can not say just where to look, but the entire likely will have VIRUS in its name. When you find it , turn it off.

MAGIC, MAGIC, MAGIC,
Thanks guys I found BOOT Security and turned it off, the format went ok and the setup with the CD was ok, one or two little hiccups, but that was me, I now have a clean computer. Should I turn the boot security back on ?? now that every thing seems to work ok
Thanks very much.

It's of limited value, and mainly serves to confound folks such as yourself - but it's certainly your choice

Boot sector virus are no longer common, any decent AV program would be preferred, and would provide a *much* greater level of protection
