Word - slow loading, slow printing

I have a Dell XPS T450mhz with 128mb of RAM. Running Windows 98 and Office 2000. AOL on startup.
It takes a long time to open Word, a longt ime to open some documents, and a long time to send something to the printer. Other applications -- like Outlook -- open quickly. I called Dell the other day for help with a major freeze. They had me reconfigure Office 2000, said the freeze was caused by having too many Norton functions loaded on setup. When I asked them why Word was loading so slowly, they transferred me to a software person, who had me run Detect and Repair. That made no difference, and they said the only solution they could offer was to reformat our hard drive. Seemed drastic to me. Any suggestions?Thanks
